|
|
I am getting closer and closer (basically in my need for cash) to just doing the dirty deed and heading out to Saudi, more or less aware of the psychological destruction which will be wrought within my soul....but anyway...
I have consistently noticed that all salaries are either in USD or in a local currency, which in turn in pegged to the dollar. Unfortunately, all my expenses and future plans are in and so earning green backs with the current and future (even worse) devalued USD is NOT good for me or my future plans. Is there anyway (other than Saudi getting some sense and dropping the green back) to negotiate a salary in Euros?
I am sorry if my question is weird or out there and as always I appreciate the input here! Cheers!

I don't do that. I am way too cynical for that. |

Salaries are pretty much always in local currency. I have heard of a very few US companies that may pay in US$. But all of the Gulf currencies are pegged on the dollar, so it is about the same thing.
There may be some oil company jobs (Libya?) that pay in pounds sterling.

Have seen some but they require some super/duper qualifications out of this world...at least ones I don't have. Still, something to consider...what about working directly on an oil rig? Ever known anyone who has done that? |

Do you mean teaching on a rig? Or doing whatever it is that they do out there to get the oil out of the bottom of the sea? Can't say that I have met either...

BAe pay in sterling, with a daily 'living allowance' in riyals. Libyan oil companies generally pay in dollars. |

Really ? That's not the impression I get. Overseas workers from Asia .... perhaps, but on the ground here, it appears to be sterling; at least for English trainers. EL Training companies such as Bell, the Council, Kortag, Langsols, Elite College etc all pay in sterling as far as I know.
I doubt whether the Serbian/Bosnian nurses here would be paid in dollars either.
My impression is that there are currently far more European oil/gas rotational guys here than North American; thus currencies other than the dollar would seem more appropriate for them.

I forgot that you are teaching in Libya Basil... do you work those shifts where you have a month or two on... then time off?
I had forgotten that one too (memory going more rapidly by the moment). I make no claims of ever understanding currency markets, but I looked at some graphs from the Yahoo conversion site and it appears that this change has benefited those living on US$ and made it even worse for those on the Euro. (when it was pegged I recall it was 3.30 and today it is 3.50)
I wonder how that transfers to those on the ground...

NO, bae pay in pounds but you can receive part of your salary in riyals but it is paid into a local account on that day`s exchange rate. |

Yep. Hitches where I am are a 2 to 1 ratio. My previous rotational gig was 3 to 1, so a slight improvement. Mind you, the one before wasn't in Libya, so i guess it balances out in the end.

Bell, the BC and Elite are not oil companies though, are they?

I bow to your more current knowledge. It is years since I worked in Libya, and then everyone seemed to be paid in dollars; due, no doubt, to the stronger North American presence at that time. |
