Hello,

I was wondering just recently about coming out looking for jobs in Madrid in January straight after new year looking for jobs. My thinking behind this is that from now until then I can work in England doing any sort of work saving up cash to support me when looking for work when I'm out there.

What do you guys on here think about this idea? Basically I'm just wondering if there will be much work available in January or if I will have missed the boat by then?

I was in a similar position to you two years ago - looking for work from January 2008 onwards, and I got some in Madrid. I have no idea how our respective qualifications and experience compare(d) in terms of ability to nab the jobs that exist, but some openings will be there, for sure. You would do well to have a week in Madrid before the Christmas holidays to do face-to-face interviews to get your foot in the door; if your first point of contact is after the break, you may be too late.

Thanks for your help. I noticed in another thread somebody mentioned "January is the second best time of year to come after September". Would anyone care to agree or disagree with this?

I agree with it pigeon. I got my job in mid-December, 2009. It wasn't hard as the last teacher informed my employer that he was not coming back after Christmas and in I dived . I would say get in Spain in early December, get a temporary flat and start CV dropping in your city of choice. You will need money to tide you over as Spanish employers pay by the month so it's a while before you receive any money and you might need a bond for you flat.

Thanks for the advice you've both given. I am obviously taking into account the current financial climate, but from speaking to some of my contacts in Madrid they have told me that there is still a lot of work around, so I just have to hope the same for January!

Just out of interest have any of you ever heard of Training Express - http://www.trainingexpress.es/mejores_cursos_idiomas ?? Is it worth considering if you have heard of it?
