From an article in the Khaleej Times about a 1 1/2 year old girl in Dubai who died from H1N1:

"The ministry has stopped releasing statistics of those infected or dead due to the disease a few months back saying that the World Health Organisation did not require it to do so.

During a recent seminar on H1N1, ministry officials admitted that they had not been able to keep track of the numbers of those infected with the virus in the country."

Just some humble reminders: Flu has been around as long as man has been around. Flu kills people every year...by the thousands.

The difference this year is that rather than mainly the elderly and/or already sick who are dying, it is way too often the young and healthy.

I don't find this surprising or unusual here in the GCC. Diseases that are incompatible with the image the local authorities like to present to the world are not discussed publicly.

There's the "pneumonia" wards at Rashid and Al Qasimi Hospitals for example - actually for patients suffering from HIV/Aids - which of course couldn't happen in this country because it's a "foreigners" disease.

One newsarticle a couple of years ago stated flatly that mental diseases - in this particular case, schizophrenia - were "imported" by foreigners and "infected" the local population. Rolling Eyes
