... and find Dave's site?

Just wondered how so many people managed to find each other in this little segment of cyberspace.

Mine was through a friend-of-a-friend, as it were. Well, more specifically, my sister took a TEFL course at Liverpool University in the UK and her tutor recommmended it to her! I caught the bug shortly after my sister and have been hooked on the site since. The difference being though, my sister has buggered off to Japan and has maintained cold turkey since and is fulfilling her TEFL her dream, whilst I'm still working towards mine, living my soon-to-be-career on this site! Nevermind, 'Patience is a virtue', they say!

Well, I was reading this forum from about April last year. My GFs sister went to do TEFLing and she still stays on the board. We caught up with what she, and others, were doing in (too many details now). Well, I started TEFLing in August and kept reading. In December I saw some posts I fancied slagging a few people off at and duely signed up. January, I was on the way. Never looked back (said as if it was a huge life-or-death situation in my life, huh?).

Was looking to teach English back in 1998 and did a Yahoo search. Found Dave's, and subsequently got two offers - one in Venezuela and one in Ecuador. Didn't take either (wish I had now), but I am back because I want my family to join me in the ESL madness tour!

Lived a happy and blameless TEFL life for over ten years before hearing (from a colleague) about something possibly libelous (if that's the correct terminology) on Dave's. Came to see for myself, monitored for a while, then decided to join. Now addicted!

One dull sunday afternoon, winter of 99. Hungover, aimless, & bored, I had the serendipitous whim to type "teaching english abroad" into the search engine on my beater pc.

An XT! Remember those? No windows, just dos commands, & a monochrome monitor. But it opened up a technicolor world of possibilities & theres no looking back now.

My sister told me about the site five or six years ago, when I was preparing to head to Prague for my TEFL certificate. I visited the site fairly regularly for a while, but usually only for teaching ideas--the "ideas cookbook" section. I didn't start reading the forum discussions until last year, as I was planning to move to Japan. Now I'm hooked.

I started reading the forums and gathered info on places I was interested in around 1997 or 1998.

It's a great site for finding what the job situation is like around the world.
