I'm working for EF in Surabaya and our workload is fine. I may not be making as much as someone at TBI, but I like my fellow teachers and this franchise is managed quite well. I'm certainly not rolling in the dough, but I was hired in with little teaching experience, so bear in mind that your options might be limited unless you have experience.
That being said, you also need to consider that the more desirable places are going to have less vacancies for obvious reasons. I have friends that work for EF in Bandung and have for many years, I was told there were no openings until Jan 2010 and that was back in July. I'm not saying don't shoot for a nicer place, but maybe consider other places in the interim, you can always move on somewhere else with a little experience under your belt.
I heard that Surabaya was terrible, but its O.K., its largely what you make of it that counts. I work with some great people and we always manage to find things to do.
Good luck in your search! |

Hey ellecbee, I'm just wondering, does EF Surabaya give NPWP's to their teachers or do they pay a "group tax"? |

That's some good advice, thanks. I haven't heard much from EF, apart from a possible opening in Bogor, but it's taking some time for them to get their act together and give me some information.
I'll keep looking.
Cheers |

Not sure who the "them" is, but if you mean the HRD, maybe they are checking your background (just a guess). If you mean people who have knowledge of Bogor on this forum, then my apologies for not responding sooner.
What would you like to know about Bogor? |

I have a few questions about Bogor, if you don't mind me jumping in the discussion.
What's the kost situation like in Bogor? I'm promising myself to be done with roommate living after my current contract (I like things to be clean). I don't have enough money to rent a place alone since they require a year's payment up front. Are there clean and affordable kost options in Bogor?
Do you know of any language schools in Bogor that offer their teachers NPWP's?
Do you know anything about TBI Bogor?
Thanks!! |

Yes there are reasonable, clean kosts available in Bogor. I don't speak from first-hand experience, but colleagues tell me they have fairly relaxed rules. The advice is that it's best to ask for a copy of the various stipulations of the premises (what time they like you to be in by, whether visitors are encouraged, exactly what facilities are available for your use etc).
I'm also advised that you can sometimes take over a house lease from a teacher who is not renewing their contract with a school. One teacher did this and was then able to negotiate to pay the rent in installments, rather than the year's money in one lump sum. Ok, that's not the norm, but it's amazing what you find out once you're here and ask around.
MPWPs vary - some teachers have them, some don't.
TBI Bogor: I only know of through heresay - some negative, some positive.
I guess at any language centre, in any place, life is largely what you make of it.
If you plan to come to Indonesia, wherever city or town you work, plan on packing your sense of humour, patience and an open mind. With those three you should be well on your way to having a rewarding experience.
Good luck, whatever you undertake. |

Yes, I heard nothing but good things about the EFs in Surabaya. I recently visited Surabaya and met quite a few people who worked there and they all seemed more than happy to be there. I would assume if other EFs were managed as well as the ones in Surabaya they would have a much better reputation among teachers. |
