Hi -

I'm just beginning to figure out which certificate I should get. I wish to teach in the Mid East but have read most positions there require teaching experience, which I do not have. My second choice is Asia.

Which would be the best certificate to get to teach in these two locales? I know there is much ado about CELTA but have also read that it's widely recognized in Europe. Is it widely recognized in the Mid and Far East?

In short, I simply want to get the certificate that will teach me the most and open the most doors for me in the part of the world I'm most interested in. Any help is appreciated.

In the Middle East (or at least in the Gulf, which is usually what people mean when they say the Middle East--the Gulf is where all the money is), the good jobs require an MA. The not-so-good jobs may or may not require a TEFL certificate, but if they do, the name on the certificate really doesn't matter as long as it's legitimate. They also generally look for a couple of years of experience, as you've already discovered.

Actually, I didn't know the Gulf is where all the money is as far as the Mid East, so thanks for letting me know.

Any advice, then, on which institutions award TEFL certificates that are considered legitimate? If there is any "best" institution or certificate, I would like to go for that.

In Japan, where the market is flooded, you don't need a TEFL certificate to open doors. Many/Most newbies are hired with zero experience/background in teaching.

However, precisely because the market has recently become flooded, it might be wise to get the CELTA. Credentials may count in the eyes of some employers, although many here don't know CELTA certificates from Delta Airlines.
