I don't do it myself but I know people who do. What do you want to know? |

Lots of people do IELTS testing in KSA. Many are from BAe but there are others. |

I know a few backpackers (no first degree) who are IELTS examiners. While it's their only income in other countries, here they have to work full-time and do it during their free time. |

I think linguist meant that in other countries the backpackers can support themselves with it. No one in the Gulf lives on IELTS testing that I know of.

IELTS have fairly strict criteria about who can be an Examiner. |

What does this mean? It is not possible to examine in multiple test centers. When a person becomes a certified examiner, their certification is 'held' by a particular test center. In order to test in another center, there either has to be a mutual agreement to allow testing at another center or a formal transfer to another center. I am a certified IELTS examiner and I have done this work in two different countries. It is not possible to freelance around.
Furthermore, it is not possible to become an examiner without a BA degree and a ESL/EFL teaching certificate such as the CELTA; other certificates are accepted as long as they meet the Cambridge ESOL standard criteria. Additionally, all applicants should usually have three years of verified teaching experience. All documents are checked and verified by the test administrator.
It is true that in some countries, where IELTS is popular, there are examiners that support themselves only by IELTS work; however, I would not label them as a backpacker. IELTS examiners are usually a professional group of people.
Linguist is just wrong. |

He may be wrong but surviving like that is darn near impossible these days. Esp. in KSA. |

IELTS Examining can supplement your income in KSA but you will not get rich by doing it.
In fact it does not pay as well as teaching !

I've never heard of anyone working in the Gulf just doing IELTS testing. First off... how would you get a work visa? Then there is the fact that many of the employers have their whole staff trained (and certified... I have my document) to be IELTS examiners. Thus in the Emirates, you would have literally hundreds of examiners in even the smaller towns.
Plus... Mr Pax. I know a few people who have certification... are not tied to any particular center... but are called in to do testing... even in a bordering country as needed. In the Gulf, IELTS testing can be an income supplement, but likely not a job that would support anyone.

Thanks Veiled.
Believe it or not, the IELTS examiner status that some of us used to view as part of our credentials is no more. There are people without degrees who are IELTS examiners. |

I have not come across any non-graduates working as IELTS examiners in KSA |

I don't believe that this is true in the Gulf, just because there are few EFLers around without degrees. But, I have read stories about this sort of problem in Asia... I believe it was China. The examiners were grading based on how much the student paid them under the table.
