To all those who are living in Hail or going to start a life in Hail. We have made a google group for organized interation (I dont know if complies with the posting policies .. please forigve me if it does not ). Please join in so that we could make this idea grow and may be in future use this platform for some excursions etc.

These are my views from Hail after being through a lot already Wink

G'day mate

Good to know that there are new faces joining the party at Hail. To start with, let me include you in the expatriates group (an online group for interaction among the teachers) please send me your email address for that. Now let me answer your questions.

1- Glitches are frequent inn saudi system but one thing which should be immense in yourself is patience. just wait and see how it goes. One just exhausts oneself in trying to speed up things but the people who are involved in bureaucracy shall not chance their pace. There might be are there are cases waiting for visa and tickets etc and the only thing they can do is wait and see.

2- There is a fair number of ESL teachers at Hail university. How many ? I dont know sorry i am not in ESL department i am in CS.

3- Accomodation is below standard. One has to make sure that they go to Mishar (one of the housing compounds where bulk of 'while' population lives or get housing allowance and live outside university housing.

Welcome to the clam mate and hope i did not depress you lots ... you know once you have you you can and choice is the liberty for those who can afford to pay for it.

Chaudry.. have you tried to adjust to the KSA systems and policies and still you feel it not worth? or you just want to bring freedom in the Kingdom?

I stayed in Riyadh for 3 months. Yes, there is to much pressure if your looking for things you missed on your day to day routine. But it didnt bother me at all as long as Im busy on my off-days internet helped me cope up the loneliness.

I hope everythings well now Chaudhry. Hows your workloads? Until now there is no movements on my wife's application, I think there are delays on her papers.

My business visa was also revoked for some undisclosed reasons maybe its the hajj that delays the process. Thanks to remote connections I can still work with my clients in riyadh.

Hi Chaudhry,

Now that you've had time to reflect, how have you found employment at Hail. Would you recommend it to prospective employees. I am thinking of applying for the next term.
Or have you jumped ship??

I was upset to read about Chaudhry's experience, it would be interesting to hear if he managed to find a new job.

There appears to be a considerable amount of negative views expressed about Hail, so I feel reluctant in making an application. I welcome views from those that are currently working there and who have had better experience.

Word on the street here is that things at UoH are better. Salaries are certainly competitive when compared to other unis in the KofSA.

I am new to this site, but have already read many of your postings with admiration, 40 years in the Kingdom must have been a challenge...

As a veteran could you possibly point me in the right direction? Is it possible for a husband and wife to apply for two different jobs/organisations? Would this complicate the visa application?

Since scot47's blocked, please allow me to correct a misapprehension on your part.
Scot47 has not been in the Kingdom for forty years; he first arrived in the early 70s, I believe, and he is there now. However, like myself (nineteen years in the Kingdom), he took breaks from Saudi in a vain attempt to preserve his sanity.
I think his total number of years there is (again, like myself) in the high teens.
But to answer your question, let me ask a few first. Would the husband and wife be in the same city and would both be teaching EFL?
I don't see why the visa application would be complicated; there'll be two different organizations hiring two different people. And the left hand in Saudi never tells the right what it's doing. But there may be complications in the "living arrangements" since you'd both (probably) be assigned housing. Visiting your wife or having your wife visit you - ah, that could be
very difficult.

Dear John,

Thank you very much for helping me with my query. Both my wife and I would like to teach EFL, possibly in Riyadh. I'm trying to establish what would be the best way to proceed if we were unable to find employment in the same organization. We have 2 young children of school age.
If we are employed by different employers is it possible to only utilise one of the housing allowances provided as married quarters? If we inform the employers of our choice would this be wise or even possible? Or is it better to get visa's through single employment as a family and for the other to find employment upon arrival?

Why has scot47 been blocked?
I have read forums containing your advice, especially those in relation to the IPA, would you still recommend them? I believe they are currently recruiting.
Saudi must have been a very different place in the 70's. Do you miss it?

It isn't Scot that has been blocked... it is the whole Saudi board. Anyone in Saudi can't access it. Big Brother figured out that he could block just one section of this website. Pretty creative, eh?

Someone else will have to answer your query. I know that in the rest of the Gulf they are very efficient at making sure that a husband and wife... even if working for two different employers in education... are not able to double dip. Teaching couples normally are able to choose the best package of the two.

But... Saudi may be different...
