I have been doing some research on how to rent an apartment in mexico city. Some of what I heard are, you need to be a citizen or have a fm3, you need a citizen to cosign for you, you need a large deposit, just to name a few. Can someone share their wisdom and experience? So I will know what I am in for.

I don't think you need to be a citizen, just an official ID, passport or FM3 will do. The complicated part is that most places ask for a fiador, which is like a cosigner which will back up the contract. The conditions for the fiador can be strict, it usually has to be someone that owns property in the city, and the property has to be of sufficient value. Most real estate companies are really strict with this condition, as well as others, such as documented income, and do a thorough background check before they will accept you. A deposit, usually one or two month's rent, is also usually required. If you rent directly from the owner you can usually negotiate some of those requirements. It ain't a lot of fun trying to rent in this city.

Check out craigslists apartment rentals for Mexico City. Most of those situations are much more flexible and dont need all the paperwork.
