Hi everybody
I am a qualified teacher residing in the UK after several years abroad.
Lately I made several applications to teaching agencies for adult education and secondary and the two that got back to me said i would need a police clearance check for each country i visited in the past 5 years. Since my CV has 6 countries stated that's 6 checks. I told them i am looking for work in adult education but the same applies - just in case i was an armed robber or something. I already have a CRB (Criminal record bureau check) for the UK but not enough.
HOW i asked? They said over the phone i would need to visit each embassy for each country! So i would have to go to London and find all six embassies - phoning them would be possible to - I may even get free calls at the job centre? (the last thoughts on phoning was mine)
This does not apply for summer school i might add a i have a job this summer.
Does anybody have any experience of this? Has anybody had police security checks for other countries? It seems like too much hassle and i might as well get my passport and go abroad again. |

| Did you get any answers regarding this? What did you do in the end? It's a really relevant issue you brought up and I'm sure there must be many people who either have some experience with this (whether or not they had a problem with police checks after being abroad for some time) or would like to know the answer for future reference! |

Groan! So not only did I have to deal with Italian bureaucracy when I moved to Italy but I'll have to when I finally move away too! No plans yet, thank goodness...  |

Thanks for replying. Thought this thread had been gnored completly.
Well i really just moved on and looked for work overseas. Summer schools don't bother with this and eventually ended up at a summer camp in UK. Have been out of work since August though  I don't like living in the UK much anyway and would really like to emigrate. Just not sure where?
I told the second agency I had been to 11 countries in the last 5 years and asked them if they could do the checks for me just to hear their response. They said NO. Wish I had said same to first agency who offered to do the checks for me and said it would take ages!!

Damn! I was hoping for a clear answer on this one. Maybe someone else will chip in with their experiences.
By the way, when I completed the form for the Police Clearance cert, it only said that I had to have been in the UK for the previous 12 months, even though it asks for your address history for 5 years. (I didn't send the form in the end because I decided to go to a different country instead of South Korea so I didn't need it.) I'm assuming that you would only need to get the equivalent of a police check for the country/countries you'd been in for the previous 12 months, NOT the last 5 years.
Certainly, when I got the enhanced police disclosure in the UK previously, I didn't have to provide police checks for all the countries I'd been to in the previous 5 years but just gave a list of countries with dates of where I'd been (However, I had been in the UK for 12 months on that occasion)
If you've been living in one foreign country with one address then I guess it should be possible to get the police check there but what happens if you've been travelling around on a tourist visa with no official address/residence for the last year? Anyone with any experience of this? Or any experience of getting/being asked to get a police check from another country? |

Where does it all end? I play football (thank goodness not in the UK) where I am a _lot_ older than many of the teenage players. Would I be regarded as a danger, will they start vetting people in the same team because the age difference is more than x years, or some players are 16 or less?
The example in the thread is a good one. If you've been travelling for a year how do you prove your innocence, it seems you're guilty unless you can prove your innocence: which, as this thread has pointed out, is difficult. |

Yes, they're trying to make it harder for people to be paedophiles on a regular basis. Occasional paedophiles should be okay though! Seriously though, these types of regulations always seem to make life harder for normal people whilst failing in their intended aims of making it more difficult for paedophiles to prey on children. I also find it pretty disturbing to see signs at children's playgrounds saying that you can only be there if you are with a child. I'm sure it prevents people who would otherwise be able to act as a safeguard for kids by simply being there whilst not preventing people who actually wanted to do harm. I'm not a parent though so what do I know? Maybe it does help to protect children. Still find the signs disturbing though.
Back to the topic - Has anyone had to do a police check in the UK after returning from being abroad and have you encountered any problems or not? Sureley someone out there must have experience of this? |
