Visa issues at EDEX seem to be the latest craze now. Meanwhile back at the camel ranch: PYP directors are stressing their concern on the type of visas that EDEX has brought their teachers into KSA on. They seem to be worried about the ramifications of teachers working in their institutions on this new Govt. visit visa. They would like this issue resolved with proper work visas issued.

I guess the PYP directors didn't even bother to think about this before they hired these teachers.
So what are they going to do - throw all the teachers out on their bums once they find out that they don't have all their ducks in a row for a work visa (and it takes EDEX ages to get approval for all those visas)? Looks like they are going to need some serious wasta and fast! |

EDEX is desperately trying to appease Qassim U. They are trying to fill the quota, but it seems the number of teachers that are being axed at QU by PYP directors exceeds the number of teachers arriving. They are really groping in the dark here and taking anyone that Skyline or ISM are sending. Some teachers are really scary and demand their rights to freedom of "whatever" and even go as far as voicing opinions against Saudi and its religion. Others have dermatological paintings that are not covered. Some insist on wearing a thobe to class because they are Muslims. Well there is more but you get the picture.
They should have known what they were signing into and have been well prepared for the harsh reality of Saudi. Even though I find all this quite amusing some teachers seem to get annoyed at the lack of rights, inconvenience of basic facilities and the fact that I find this quite amusing. It should be stated for the record that coming to KSA is no picnic and if you are misinformed or uninformed you will not be a happy camper.
EDEX is just another company amongst many new companies that have opened in the past few years that are trying to deal with the massive influx of native English speaking teachers that are required by all universities. This new exodus into the KSA is relieving the old guard of non native speaking English teachers. IMO. The idea is to create an experimental atmosphere of English emersion while the students are in the universities.

...and, this is exactly what some of the older posters were trying to convey. Personally, I find it "interesting" that the most vociferous posters who posted hate at the oldsters have "oddly" gone silent after proudly and grandly announcing their securing of the bizarre new visas and their imminent departure/arrival to the kingdom of pain...

Yes, the ostrich crowd seems to have flown. I'm quite sure they don't still have their heads in the sand. |

'axed' or did you mean asked?
A little while back you said:

Flash News Update: management have over projected the need for teachers here. They seem to be doing well for the first semester with 25% less teachers than they said they needed.

Sounds like they can't make up their minds.
One minute they over project and the next minute they under project (the number of teachers they need)! Those administrators at your university sound like real winners , if you 'axe' me? |

The universities of Saudi are all short on English (EFL) teachers/instructors/lecturers. This will continue for some time yet, but will this effect the saleries? In what way? Higher or lower?
Write a one paragraph answer using your notebooks and dictionaries.

The Magic Kingdom is short on good English teachers who can differentiate between 'effect' and 'affect', and 'salaries' and 'saleries'! |

Unfortunately, the KSA will not get the number of 'good English teachers' it needs until they do something about the reputation of the country as well as how the admin. generally treats teachers. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. Word spreads fast! |

I certainly agree. it is the treatment of the faculty that must change, then maybe the reputation will change. And it isn't just about money. |

The best of teachers will not put up with it (for long). They'll leave and they won't go back either. Then, they'll tell all their other colleagues around the world about their experiences. Saudi will be left with mostly unqualified people who will tolerate anything for money or the chance to experience the Holy Land. |

Yes, but I don't really think they care, or at least a lot of them don't.
The idea of education at PMU was largely a joke. The university exists for a number of reasons, mostly monetary, but actual education and service to the community don't seem to register on the radar.
If they can get enough incompetent backpackers to fill the classrooms, then their mission is accomplished. If someone actually qualified stumbles in by accident, that person won't be happy, and others will resent her for making them look bad and for demanding standards.
Dumb, happy and undemanding. These seem to be the preferred qualifications. |
