Watching camel racing on TV, I noticed there are no jockeys on the camels. Instead there is a sort of doll. I am wondering how are the camels compelled to run as fast as they can and beat the other camels? Thanks,

Seems to work as well as the tiny little "slave" boys that used to do it...

My favorite part of watching camel races on TV... after the repetitive music... was the parallel race of the owners/trainers in their 4WDs and pick-ups. The actual camel race itself is completely boring from about three strides after the start.

That seems to be an old article. I notice that the only date mentioned is 2003 and the link at the bottom is about stopping the "ports deal." That is old news.

From what I've heard, although I haven't looked it up (and I'm not going to waste my time doing so), the topic of indentured little camel-jockey- boys apparently speaks to one of those rare things George Dubya did that one could agree with: he's said to have pressured His Royal Hiney, as in enough already with the boy slaves.

You don't see the 'doll' whipping the camel? It is the whipping that does it.

BTW, I watched a program on National Geographic on how these robot jockeys were 'invented'. The best robotics engineers/scientists from the West were hired to build the things, and it took years of research and trials to perfect them. I was just shaking my head throughout the program at the cold cruelty of it all. (if robots didn't exist, or if they didn't have the money to hire scientists, it would be back to enslaving little boys from Pakistan and destroying their lives for centuries to come)

The robots are amazing to watch. It's the old electric train syndrome, now turned into video games: give a boy or a man a remote control and he's in ecstasy. I should know as I am one of these remote control nuts.
