Yes, when you're on the course and therefore near wanting to apply, if you're still of a mind, let me know and I'll give you details of places that take native speakers. |

Coledavis is right about the dubious value of online TEFL. Don't anyone be fooled. Don't waste your time or money. |

Quite a few Russian schools are employing people, especially out in Siberia. You'll need the CELTA, as you now know. When you've got it, pm me and I can let you know some schools which sometimes take native speakers. |
I like your blog Cole, a great read!
I'd be interested in hnb1's question also 'when should I start looking for work for a September 2010 start? April/May?'
I spent 3 months in Russia in 2005 (mostly in Perm with a charity for street kids ) but would like to return and work/teach English.
I have some experience teaching adults/minority groups (i work as a volunteer with Asylum seekers) and im hoping to start teaching English here in Ireland to members of the refugee/asylum seeker community after xmas.
This should help develop classroom skills i hope.Im doing a basic TEFL course shortly (i to i) http://www.i-to-i.com/tefl/
But im not sure how good its going to be.
I will be getting the CELTA next year around summer i hope.
Novosibirsk looks to be the place i'd pick east of Moscow.
Not sure how westerners handle the Siberian winter if its hitting -20 degree's though ?! |

I'm not sure that you'll need the i to i if you're going to get the CELTA anyway. (I'm assuming i to i is something you have to pay for.) CELTA is the certification that'll get you further, IMO.
Good luck! |

Time to apply: I'm not sure about April or May, but I would say contact the schools as soon as possible. Remember that they've got to wait at least 30 days for the administration in Novosibirsk to churn out the invitation. And they have to put out new advertisements, as they will now want to promote the presence of their new native speaker from England, USA, etc.
The temperature isn't as much of a problem as you might think. Most schools out in Siberia try to put you in accommodation near the school and the accommodation is always warm (unlike some British hang-outs). Also, one gets used to it. One day, I wandered out for a walk one sunny evening and told a colleague when I got back what a warm day it was. "No Cole, it's minus 15. You only feel warm because you've got used to minus 30." Minus 30 is cold and you do need to wrap up. Don't bother bringing loads of thermals because unless you're doing a lot of winter hiking, you won't need them (except thermal socks, which are useful), as you'll get to your office and get very hot taking the stuff off, if there is somewhere to take them off. Good walking boots, and the ability to apply clothes in layers is best. I haven't yet worn more than one pair of trousers at once, but a friend suggested ski bottoms to be worn over trousers as they're easily removed again.
Thanks for your kind comments about the blog. There's a new one out today, as it's British Remembrance Day (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - there's some material for today's classes - you can get an mp3 of The Last Post - and 'For the fallen' - you know "age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn". Sorry I haven't blogged often recently; am teaching over 30 teaching hours a week at the moment, plus less to say at the moment.
