Hi all,
I have been living & teaching in Bali for the past year. My contract is up & I'm going to be moving to Java in July. I've been in Asia for the past 6 years & have my ESL Certificate and 4 years teaching experience.
My first choice would have to be Yogyakarta, I've heard nothing but good things about the place, but I've only been able to find 2 job postings online. Anybody know of any good schools in the area. Also, both of the postings were for about 4million/month (which seems incredibly low), is this a standard salary for the location?
My second choice would be Bandung. I've been able to find alot of job opportunities & the salary is alot higher. Any suggestions for good schools ('good' in terms of hours, school management, dedication to teaching rather than making money). A few I've heard of are: EEP, Ivy League & TBI...
Thanks for any & all help!

I'm curious as to how you feel about your experience in Bali. I've been wanting to work in Bali or Lombok, but I don't see much about it from people. I'm not a big city person, so Denpasar/Kuta isn't really where I'd want to be.
Yogya is a cheap place to live, and money goes far, so salaries will be lower, but Rp 4mil sounds a bit TOO low. You might drop them a line and tell them what you're willing to accept (aim high) - you might get accepted. I don't know of any schools there or in Bandung, sorry. Keep in mind that part of Jogja is in an earthquake zone, and it's been active the past 2 years, so be careful. Also, Yogya is very touristy in some areas, but you can avoid that if you want. Lots of foreigners, so it's easier to find what you need than other cities.
Bandung is a big city, very busy, and it has some famous unis in it. If TBI is the same as where I'm living, then the salary is probably not so good. I can't say about the other two. Bandung doesn't have a lot of foreigners (that I know of), so you'll have a harder time getting foreign stuff. They have some great siomay, though!
Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

There are quite a few schools in Bandung...
EF has 3 centres - starting salary approx 9 mill, more with previous EF experience.
TBI has 3 centres - starting salary approx 9.5 mill.
EEP has a large centre - not sure of salary.
UPI have a contract within the BPK schools - salary approx 14 mill
All of the above are well run and manage to mantain their teachers for 2nd/3rd year contracts etc.
There are a few Nat plus/International schools as well.
Hope this helps. |

EEP has a good rep in Bandung. The TBI schools there are also original TBI establishments and not franchises. |

I know lots of teachers in Indonesia, and a few that are elsewhere, and some may be looking for work. If you can give me the info (school, job, salary, benefits, etc.), I'll let them know. Who knows?

I agree, EEP does have a good rep in Bandung & as I previously stated so do the others..
I've been in Bandung for many years now & know teachers that work at all of them, EEP, TBI & EF, everyone seems to enjoy their jobs and all love living in Bandung.
Two of the three centres are original TBI centres, one of them is very new due to moving location. It's actually moved nearly opposite EEP (can't be good for business). The third IS a franchise (Jl. Pasir Kaliki).. |

Hi all
I will be visiting a friend of mine near Yogya next week - I may stay on in Indo if there is adult teaching work available.
Does anyone know of any adult schools in Yogya, Bandung or Semarang?
I don't have a CELTA - however I am prepared to get one. I have two degrees and an adult teaching cert.
Thanks ! |
