I had to laugh at the snippy responses crying foul to what they doubtless dubbed the brazen attitude of the naughty poster who went home at 2. I wonder if management isn't as much of the problem as gossipy colleagues who set up their own patrols and police the comings and goings of others. Sad, really. This pious attitude speaks volumes. Just because you may be in pepetual fear of not getting that coveted contract renewal doesn't mean you have to project it on to fellow colleagues. |

As far as I can see, SV has been the only one to cry "foul." The rest seem to be trying to work out where this paragon of fearlessness, who refuses to name his or her school, may have been employed. If in fact he was employed at all. |

Noor.
I don't doubt he/she worked in the UAE for 6 years. It is very possible.
In fact from their post, I think they made it very clear how they managed to take off at 2pm every day. They mention how staff and the MANAGEMENT knew the real score at their school.
If the management is in on it with you, or you are in the right group with management, then you can leave at 2pm and it doesn't matter.
I do believe that is the most important distinction there... It is much easier if management is in it with you than if they are there busting your balls about taking off at 3pm for a dr's appointment. |

Snippy? I just found his little bragfest on "how rules are for everyone else, not for me" immature and misleading. One should never try to pass off one's experience with one employer as how everyone should treat the system. (ie.... ignore it and do as you please... only the foolish follow the rules.) One does need to use common sense about picking one's flaunting of rules carefully depending the particular management of the particular employer. That is true of every job everywhere in the world.
I was one of the fortunate ones who never had to worry about contract renewal. But that freedom doesn't mean that I get to ignore the employer's rules and look down on the people who do. I was also fortunate that only one employer, HCT, was obsessive about this rule.

Unquestionably.
BS may, however, be simply trying to elicit a reaction. |

Oh dear, I do appear to have ruffled a few feathers, and caused the superannuated mucker known as Failed Sentiments to get her knickers all in a twist too!
Let me expand a little on my posting. Firstly, management were never too hot on 'presentism' at the college where I worked, so leaving after your teaching was done never caused a problem - except for the Stasi-like colleagues (typically unmarried women) who had nothing better to do in their life than slave away at the font of education. Poor cows!
For their benefit, I always used to leave a jacket on my chair, the computer switched on, and a cup of coffee on my desk - just before I left, of course. This practice was adopted by several of my colleagues, too - in fact, I think they taught me to do it!
As I mentioned before, it wasn't an attempt at skiving - just that I sometimes had to pick up the kids, and I preferred to do my prep at home, where things were a lot quieter and much more relaxed.
And if I had to teach on some days from 8:30 to 10: 30, and then 11:30 to 13:30, why shouldn't I leave at 2? Other days I worked 11:30 to 13:30, and then 14:30 to 16:30, so I had no need to turn up until ... oh, but I won't even go there, as some of the over-pious amongst us will really start to get angry!! |

I'm very sorry (for you) NCTBA and FS if you have such trouble facing the truth. I'm not boasting, just stating what I (and many others) did.
If it makes you so angry, I guess you must be one of those 'small-minded colleagues' who would squeal and shout 'It's not fair!' whenever they saw a fellow teacher leave early.
If so, just take a look at yourself in the mirror ... that's a face a lot of your colleagues will never miss!
BTW, in my current job (not in the UAE) I do a 7:45 to 3:15 day. Does that make you feel better now? |

Well... BS is still living up to his initials. He can only manage to insult his ex-colleagues and anyone who posts anything that points out the insufficiency of his postings.
And note... our "small minded" poster here still can't manage to mention the employer. Which is, of course, crucial for his "advice" to have any validity here whatsoever.

Dear NCTBA,
It's unfair of you to assume that BrownSauce is a troll. It's very possible he/she might just be your common, garden-variety slacker who thinks that people who do their best at their jobs are clueless idiots.
Regards,
John |

Jeez, there are quite a few people around here who have a problem in reading - or is it they just don't like to digest unpalatable 'advice' (which I was never giving - just putting across my experience).
JS wrote "It's very possible he/she might just be your common, garden-variety slacker who thinks that people who do their best at their jobs are clueless idiots".
Wrong JS, very wrong. If you'd bothered to read what I actually wrote, you wouldn't be so keen to put your negative slant on it. I stated that I preferred to work at home, rather than follow the absurd dictat of system that equates 'working' and 'productivity' with sitting in front of a computer for 9 hours every day. I CAN think for myself - maybe you should try it some day - you ARE a teacher, after all!!
As for Failed Sentiments: "He can only manage to insult his ex-colleagues and anyone who posts anything that points out the insufficiency of his postings. " Well, if you feel insulted, I'm sorry, but you should learn to get real, lady
I much prefer to speak as I find, and if I think you're being stupid, I'll say so. I guess that FS belongs to that group of colleagues who smile and say 'good morning' to your face - and then grass you up to the superviser. Yes, there were PLENTY of such two-faced types at HCT!! |
