Dear all,

I am about to start my Celta course and I plan to go to Poland in January to look for a job.

I read that the best time to look for jobs is September. Does anyone have experiences in hunting for jobs in January? Is it very difficult? Doesn't the new semester start in February? How long did it take you to find a job?

Thanks for your replies!

Hey Frances

January is the second best time to be looking after August/September.

If you want a job ANYWHERE in Poland, you'll be able to apply online. They're always looking.

However, if you're looking to one of the more attractive areas to a lot of foreigners such as Warsaw, Krakow or Wroclaw, you may well need to do some pavement pounding.

I arrived 4 years ago this January in Krakow, did a fair bit of walking and CV dropping (but not half as much as some- I'm quite lazy) and it all worked out fine. One of the city centre schools passed my details onto a school a bit further out (still very convenient) and I had full time work from the end of February, i.e. the start of the second semester.

Any more questions?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply, that was very helpful.

Yes, I would like to go to Warsaw. I'm actually planning to go there for a week or two just for job-hunting (while retaining my flat (and job) in the UK as a back-up since I'm too scared to move there without having secured a job) . I was hoping that I might be able to find a job within one or two weeks but that's probably too optimistic, no?

Thanks

Yes, that sounds a little optimistic in my opinion.

However, I am no expert on Warsaw. Is there anybody out there who can help out a bit more?

Do you have a BA? CELTA? Teaching experience? If the answer's yes to al least two of these questions then you should have no problem finding work.

Are you a citizen of an EU country? If yes, great. You can work legally with little hassle. But if you're not EU you will need to work for a school that agrees to sponsor you for a visa and work permit. This can be a real pain, as I've found out myself.

Thanks for all your replies.

I have a BA and will have CELTA by January. I am an EU national but have no teaching experience and am not a native speaker. Well, I guess I can only try, if they don't want me I'll just have to go somewhere else.

Thanks again!

That's the spirit!

Good luck.
