No, I don't have a problem with the country, just with Hess.
Hess does not equal Taiwan. |

I'd like to hear 123Lotto's take on all of this.
In any case, I'm sorry you're going through this. In the long run, however, it'll work out to your benefit if you eventually end up in a better situation. Chin up! |
Rooster's post above mentions that Hess is not Taiwan - well, on the same theme I'd like to repeat: I am not Hess.
I have come onto this board with a very humble goal. That is to accurately describe my positive experience at Hess.
Yes, I have developed loyalty to Hess. This is natural due to them paying me very well for a long time, treating me well and offering me many opportunities beyond solely teaching in the classroom.
Whatever has happened to Rooster will not change that.
However, my sympathy does lie with him. From what I have picked up from his posts over the last few months I am really surprised at what has occurred. However, i am reluctant to comment too much as there is almost certainly more information essential to understanding his outcome which SHOULDN'T be shared in order to protect Rooster's anonymity.
In terms of the piece of Hess Policy you describe above I would like to say a couple of things:
1. I am not a lawyer. Nor have I any experience with or spoken to anyone who has tried to contest a Hess contract in court.
2. Hess tries to protect itself with its policy. There are some people (NOT Rooster) who would think to come to Taiwan, get Hess training and then deliberately move to another school within the first month.
3. Hess tries to protect its teachers with its policy. This policy is heavily influenced by foreigners - who DO care that our teachers get treated well. Not only are there moral and ethical reasons to do so, protecting the rights of your teachers makes good business sense.
4. Hess teachers have unlimited access to Hess policy before and after they sign a contract.
Anyway, I don't know if that helps anyone here or not. Perhaps I will be accused (again) of being a Hessbot... I don't know.
Most importantly in all of this, is that Dave's Forum is providing a useful and helpful support system for Rooster as he goes through a really tough part of his stay in Taiwan.
I want to thank those of you who are offering him, healthy and positive, advice and encouragement! |

Is this just another example of bad management? Hess are a chain school which means they have many branches like Shane so some could be terrible and some good? Shane Japan have a very bad reputation but some in Taiwan are OK. It is outragous they asked a teacher to sign such a document!

They are not alone. I once worked for a Happy Marion. I decided to quit haflway through our second contract because they started getting crazy (I won't go into details, because it really has nothing to do with the contract). I gave my formal written notice I was quitting, which was allowed by the contract if I gave a months notice, which I did. This was following a meeting full of more craziness.
Anyway, the day after I gave then the notice, we had another meeting. Here is where it gets funny.
The first said, "It's ok, we won't charge you the fine for breaking the contract." Well, I didn't break the contract. It was built in to their contract that I could void it with 30 day notice. But it wasn't a big deal anyway, it was only like 5000NT, and I wasn't going to pay it anyway.
The next part however really gets interesting. They said something like "Ok, well, if you are really unhappy, then you can leave now, today. Just sign this paper that says you quit, and we will pay you. The you can go."
I reply, "But this says I am quitting on the same day I gave notice...that isn't true. Also, I already gave you written notice. I'm not filling out another form."
They say "It's ok. There's nothing to worry about. See, we have your pay right here."
I say "I don't care if you pay me now, or in 30 days, but I am not signing something that shows I gave you no notice, when I clearly gave you 1 month."
They say "It's ok, it's just OUR form. We need THIS form, not just your letter."
I say "Ok, well if it isn't such a big deal.....)They start to get excited, thinking they won)....then I'll just call my wife (Taiwanese) and see what she thinks about this whole situation."
They immediately pull the paper away from me and say "No, it's ok. Just don't come in anymore and we'll pay you what's owed on your normal payday."
It isn't just Hess that has some slimy people.
(And for the record, IMO Hess isn't a bad starting point for those who come here knowing nothing, but educate yourself quickly once you get here). |

I'm working at Hess, and three superiors have watched my lessons and evaluated me. One of them didn't like my lesson, one thought it showed improvement and wasn't so bad, and the third, I still haven't heard back from.
My immediate supervisor has already told me that I shouldn't count on having this job after the probational month is up -- it's "up to me." Well, I've done my best, and they'll let me know on Thursday whether I'm fired or hired.
Let's suppose I'm fired. Here are my questions:
1. Do I have 14 days after they report the firing to get out of Taiwan or find a new job, or just seven?
2. If I have to leave Taiwan, will it be easy to get another 60-day visitor's visa and come back? Or will the Hong Kong visa office know I'm just going back to get another job and refuse me one?
3. What should I say to interviewers? I mean, on one hand, I was fired, but on the other hand, I already have a visa and can start working immediately. What should I let on in interviews? |

Ummm...
That was weird...
I felt...awkward...
It's all right folks, I'm more or less okay now. No more need to worry. I've been working for my new employer for two months now, and while she seems nitpicky and never satisfied, I don't think she's going to fire me.
I only have 11 hours, but actually, I've realized that working three/four days a week was a blessing in disguise.
I'm using all my extra free time that I've suddenly gained for a worthy pursuit -- getting my bachelor's degree. Keep in mind, I'm one of those rare few that took advantage of the AA+TEFL combo loophole, so I actually don't have my BS yet. I've decided it's better just to work part-time and get my degree quickly. You see, rather than making extra cash at 550 NTD an hour that I'll just end up spending, I can get my BS faster this way, and make REAL money in the Middle East once I have my BS.
That's the plan.
So yeah, things worked out. Hess didn't sink me.
I plan to stay here until the end of my contract primarily for the "one year of experience" to put on my resume and my obligation since I signed a contract, and then hit another country like Saudi Arabia and make ungodly sums of money, pay off my student loans, buy some land somewhere, and still have a cushion for later... |
