This isn't a "vetted" story and I can't find any mainstream commentary. Can anyone in Vietnam comment? |

I got a message from a FB club in VN saying that a shutdown was likely coming soon.
This was a couple of days ago.
I just tried to log on, and I could not. Could be a technical problem, but I've never had it before.
Conditions in Vietnam has changed for the worse. |

Yes, FB is blocked now, in Vietnam.
What are they afraid of, I don't know. |

That can't be true? If it is, well....fuel to the fire. It would show the powers at be are much more paranoid about potential power of the masses in many different ways. If you want to learn more, then search out web sites that are mostly banned in VN by southern elements, most notably the deposed rulers of the South and many former citizens who are not allowed to return to their homeland. There are many of them, and you will know that you have found one when you see the Southern flag (red horizontal addidas strips on a yellow background) on the page. |

It did for a day it would seem. I couldn't access it at my work's ISP but I could at home. I can access it from both sites now.
It was on an officially circulated list of banned ISP's. When I say official, it was in Vietnamese and it was passed to me by the IT guy at work.
No idea why it was banned and why it now seems to be back up. If I wanted to go to a country where they have these silly restrictions, I would have gone to China. I hope it was a one off. |

Well, that' interesting. Down one day and up the next. Would like to hear more reports and figure out what's happening....
About the south and the flag, a lot of my Vietnamese students here (I teach ESL here in Texas, where Vietnamese is the 3rd most spoken language, incidentally) have talked about that flag. The yellow flag, they call it. It's funny: all of our students here are from the southern Vietnam and they are sure to correct any reference to SaiGon when people refer to the city as HCMC. It sure puts the feud between southern and northern California to shame when one considers the implications :S |

^ Apples and Oranges.
The FB block is just the tip of the iceberg. This censorship goes back long before the civil conflict. |

Inky, it did. It may have only been partial on some ISP's but I can only tell you what I experienced that day and what I was told by the local VN's that I work with.
I've also posted the banned list on the poll thread. |
