| Hey, I'm new to teaching in Taiwan and can't decide where to teach or what schools to go for. Any advice/info would be great! Thanks |

| My advice is to go where the jobs are...oh, wait...the job market is horrible due to the worldwide recession. There are very few jobs to go around due to low student enrollment and lots of teachers with years of experience pounding the pavement looking for work. Ummm...Good luck! |

I agree with Modest Mouse. My ARC sponsoring school is only giving me ten hours this week (and two of those are at a paltry "tutoring" rate of 350 NTD an hour). I have a side job, but it ends this week, that has been giving six hours a week (when they aren't cut for a holiday or field day).
After this week, my monthly pay will be roughly the same as a Taiwanese McDonald's employee (less than 20,000 NTD). I am a master at economizing, so *MAYBE* I can live on 10,000 NTD if I buy bulk bags of dumplings and trap a few cockroaches and rodents, but still, that's only $300 in savings a month, and I'm paying off American student loans here.
Please, for everyone's sake including your own, don't come here. |

That situation sounds pretty grim. At the risk of sounding critical, why don't you get out of it and get a different job? I had some teaching positions turn sour before which lead me to dust off the resume and move on. With a salaried position in Taiwan supplemented with some privates, there should be money to be made. I recall people complaining on the forums over the past few years how the good days were over and no more money was to be made. Well, I listened and wondered how it was that I was still working my butt off and filling up my bank account.
Move on and get a better job. |

regarding location, this will really depend on what you fancy. Taipei is the most, dare I say, international of the lot. You can get buy w/out knowing Chinese here (though, it is cumbersome). It also has the best public transportation, nightlife options, and shopping. However, it comes at a premium price. Rent here is probably 40% higher than taichung, and food is 100% higher than the south, I'd say. Most would say taichung has the best weather, where as the south has more of that laid back beach type feel to it. You will need a scooter, for sure, in any place other than Taipei. |

I believe that some agents still have jobs that they cannot fill. It depends if you are willing to live anywhere in Taiwan or want to stay in Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung. |

| Kaoshiung if you want warm/hot weather all year. Taipei if you don't mind chilly winters. |
