One of my friends is in her early 50s, and she would like to apply to Westgate. At her age, should she even bother? I know in Korea, it's difficult to get a job if you're in that age bracket, but I'm not sure how it works in Japan.

I appreciate your insight.

Take care,

Bryan

I don't know, but I would think experience and education in TEFL would be more important in Westgate's case. What does your friend have?

Thank you for the response. My friend has a TEFL certificate and two years experience teaching ESL in South Korea.

I think most Japanese employers prefer teachers in their 30s and are not likely to hire new teachers that are over 50 for many reason including feeling that they maybe should pay them higher salaries, are less likely to be able to control or BS them and also that their students may want someone younger

I would not go to Japan as an over 50 teacher. I think Taiwan or Saudi is a better option but the limit is around 58 in Saudi for new hires.

If you have a PHD, speak Japanese well and are academically famous then that is different.

Yeah, they definitely employ people over. I work for westgate at the mo and know quite a few 'older' people. Go ahead and apply!

Any questions, then get in touch!

If that's the case, then people over 50 might be put off applying by the long working hours if it means that they become exhausted at the end of them! Surprised (In case you're wondering, I'm 44.)

Yes, I worked two contracts with Westgate and there were several people over 50 among the teachers both semesters. I am in my mid 40s myself.

Yep, the contract is exhausting...but well worth it in my opinion.

You feel like you deserve the break at the end and the money gives you opportunity to do that.
