Marg, I'm afraid that if you're waiting for someone to suddenly come up with a job that your boyfriend can do or a visa he can get, You're waiting in vain- Immigration's rules are quite clear, and they tend not to bend them. As Glenski says, does he have any work experience that he could use here? Based on what you have told us (US citizen, no degree, not married to you), there is no way he can get a working visa here, and this is not a country where authorities turn a blind eye to what minimal under-the-table work exists.
When I first came to Japan for a year, my boyfriend at the time was also unqualified for a visa. He was self-employed, so he came for 90 days, went back home and saved up, and came back for 90 days again, although Immigration at the airport gave him a bit of a hard time when he came back to Japan so soon. He did a few odd jobs for the owner of the building we stayed in and was paid a bit of cash, but not a living wage by any means and that's obviously not a job someone could rely on getting. |

I think this is the best advice you'll get marge, that is if your boyfriend wants to run the risk of working under the counter and the risk of deportation.
Once over here something no one's thought of may well pop up.
Other than that his best bet would probably be a student visa if he can find somehthing to study and the means to pay for it. |

His only option is to freelance but he would have to me married to a Japanese lady to do it long term and legally
Modeling or extra work is possible but those visas are often short term and the jobs may be few and far between with the bad economy
He could legally teach private group classes with a spousal visa |

Would it not be possible for him to get bar work in one of the more tourist centred areas at all?
I'm in a very similar situation with my girlfriend. She's trying to think of ideas, but it's not easy. It seems rather obvious, but what about tour guides for tourists? |

The problem isn't really not being able to get work, but not being able to get a visa. No degree, no visa! (unless they have years of experience in the trade they are trying to get hired for and can find a suitable employer).
If you married your girl friend, then she could apply for a dependents visa. Then she could work part-time at any job she could find. Same applies to the OP's boyfriend. |

Thanks, but I'm really not ready for that extremity just yet. We're looking into the working holiday visa. |
