A generalized (and, of course, subjective) rule of thumb:
The "worst" places have the best salaries
The "best" places have the worst salaries
In between, there's a sliding scale.

John,
That's sound advice. I want to teach in South America but I think I will have to put in some time in the Middle East or Asia first. For a new teacher with an MA in Linguistics is the ME the best bet? I know I've seen job posts where they require as many as 7 years of experience.
Thanks. |

Dear evolving81,
Most (virtually all, really) good employers in the Middle East usually want three years overseas experience. There are those that'll hire with only an MA in Linguistics, but the catch is that those are usually places where it's not so nice to work.
In Saudi, I'd recommend trying The Institute of Public Administration or KFUPM (King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. Though both like to hire with the three years of experience, exceptions have been made due to need for teachers. They're among the best places to work there.
For the UAE (a better all-around deal), I'd suggest posting on the UAE board.
Regards,
John |
