Non-Anglophone Europeans (particularly French and Germans)? UAE? Qatar? In what capacity are they there usually? What about university positions? are there non-Anglophone Europeans there as well? |

Yes, there are lots of non-anglo Europeans in both countries - working in many different companies, many are in construction or construction related fields, as well as some transport, finance and real estate operations. |

In the UAE I know plenty of Germans in education. All the French people I know (appart from those at the Alliance Francaise) are something to do with matters military: training or selling stuff. |

The Omanis don't seem to have a problem with nationality the way some places do. A lot of the teachers are Asians (Indians, Pakistanis), Arabs (Egyptians, Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians, Algerians, Iraqis), Australians, Americans and Brits. The nice thing about working in Oman is that the Americans are not in the majority. Although I am from the US myself, I am in a mixed marriage (my wife is Lebanese) and I enjoy the mixed nationality atmosphere. My current job has a lot of Americans, hence a lot of big egos and people trying to run down others. Having worked in a very collegial, colleague friendly atmosphere for 9 years in Oman, it's a big shock to now work with so many aggressive compatriots in the UAE. The compatriots I worked with in Oman were much nicer and less manipulative.

There are quite a few Eastern Europeans teaching in Oman as well. I've come across some Bulgarians, Russians, Serbians, Ukrainians and Poles. Their English was very good and well pronounced. The more nationalities the merrier, as far as I am concerned. We Americans should be proud so many people from other countries want to teach English. |

Oman certainly has its own melting pot of teachers from all over the world. One of the most interesting I met was a man from Burma. I've also met some very nice Indonesian teachers. At least Oman is not hung up on the native-speaker thing that some places like HCT seem to be into. |

Well, I think the British should be more prouder than the Americans, because British English is the mother of all world Englishes, including the Hillbilly English of NCTBA!
I do not think other people from other countries want to teach English for the eyes of Americans!
Shhht, NCTBA and VS are coming .... |
