I believe he was using the Royal We and not actually referring to Lucy but to himself and his fellow country(wo)men.

Can't non-Brits save in GBP? Smile

Luckily I had changed my dollars into Euros just before the dollar started going pear-shaped.

At the moment I'm keeping my money in Turkish Lira but when the rates bottom out I'll convert into Euros. Sterling is good, but I prefer Euros because I rarely go to the UK (first trip back next week since 2002) and eventually I'll move to another gig in the EU and converting it all again will be a pain. Better not forget my mattress when I move... Laughing

I'm Canadian and I save in pounds. It's fun! Very Happy

With regards to my comment about Brits and non-Brits... Smile aw hell, it was only about his comments about how expensive it is for Brits to live in the UK but how nice and cheap it is when travelling. Not about saving or anything. Golly but this is making my head ache.

Bos ver!

I consider Euros to be the world standard currency now, USD are too unstable.

Does anyone know of any online European banks that have accounts that don't require an address? I'd like to cut the umbilical - I move all the time so addresses are a pain. Why should I have to change a whole bunch of addresses every time I move?

Lucy you should have put it in pounds sterling not dollars

Actually, I'm American. That's why I went for the dollars. My student loans have to be paid in dollars from an American account. But I have nothing against saving in pounds, or Euros, or whatever Smile

Aramas, try HSBC. They have off shore Euro, dollar and sterling accounts that you can do online. The minimum investment is 5000 in either currency

Can you open a bank account in Britain if you aren't British and don't live there?

Do you have a website I could look at? I actually have an HSBC account here in Mexico as they took over my bank recently, and I was wanting to change it into an offshore account that I can use in Australia, UK and Spain. Going into a branch is not an option - we can't even get international food here, I think their heads would explode if I asked for an application form for their offshore accounts... Shocked

Thanks for the info.

Lozwich.

Most people I know who work abroad long term still maintain a bank account in the home country, usually at mother's address.
Has anyone cut the umbillical completely and just used local banks in whichever countries they were working at the time?

I have accounts back in my home country, and for a mailing address I use my parents' home.

I also have a savings account here in Indonesia because my school insists on electronic deposit for monthly payment. I can't blame: it's kind of inconvenient to deal with millions of rupiah; the first month I was paid cash and the wad of banknotes was about 2 inches thick. Shocked

About once every 2 or 3 months I wire everything in the Indo account to my account back home.

Internet access is great: I also have a credit card and retirement fund with my home bank: it makes it very convenient to pay bills, save retirement money, etc.

Not a conventional bank account. If you are "an individual of high net worth" then a private bank will welcome your custom, I'm sure. UK money laundering legislation is fairly strict so it is unusually hard for non- residents to deposit money.

There are plenty of offshore or "expatriate" bank accounts based in the Channel Islands - British rocks that have somehow managed to stay outside the EU for tax purposes - and these operate very much like Swiss accounts with internet access. Problem is, such accounts are expensive to set up and maintain.

I know in Britain we can get current accounts in Euro's if we so wish. I'd be surprised if other countries didnt offer similar services? Esp former British Empire countries.

As for the comment about how its expensive for us Brits to live here or to save abroad I did mean my fellow brits and I not us lot on here!
