A large language school only has Brits and Australians (and probably New Zealeaners and Irish) teach IELTS.

Americans and Canadians are not allowed to teach IELTS.

Is this normal? Or, is this the exception?

In theory anyone can teach IELTS or become an examiner. I've done plenty of examining with those from any number of countries- not just those nationalities you mention.

Could you post which school that is please?

A few of my students at the beginning of the year complained when they sat their IELTS exam @ BC and their examiner was a apparently an Indian.

He was Indian. They were going to Australia. They wanted an Australian.

They actually wrote a complaint letter. Poor guys, despite the racist tone of the letter I felt sorry for them. They were shocked when I told them that black fellas were there before the white fellas.

what does IELTs stand for? I went to that school and they told me I could teach IELTs there, but I would have to imitate Mr. Bean. I was like, gosh darnit fellows, I'm more of a Mick Jagger kind of ol' chap. See you around the polo club, ta ta.

The attitude of these students may be considered by us more enlightened types to be both stereotypical and reprehensible, yet the fact is that they have a shockingly limited worldview - rather like the Chinese: they (at least these particular complainants) believe that (almost) all Australians are white, so they only want(ed) a white Australian to be their IELTS examiner. (I was an IELTS examiner once myself, so I should know.)

It's not really their fault: it's the way they've been brought up in what is, after all, a socialist country that largely confines itself mentally and politically to their own worldview which is just not considered to be anywhere as pluralistic as ours. That's just the way things are.

If and when they finally go to Australia, they will almost definitely want to confine themselves socially (after class hours, that is) to making contacts solely with people of their own culture who may harbour the same prejudiced views of non-whites as them - just like the Chinese - because they are so insecure as a people. Pluralism is something that a lot of people I have taught over the years (and I have been in China for just over eight years now) just can't handle - it's such an alien concept to them. They only go to Anglophone countries just for the prestige of gaining a degree or other qualification - making long-term friends with the natives doesn't even enter into it.

Or State capitalism.

Back to the OP. Are you sure about this at L.L? I worked there for four years including a year and a half in the HR Department. This is news to me.

There are four different schools and I don't believe there is an "official" policy on this, unless things have changed in the last couple of months.

The 'problem' resides not in the nationality of the examiner, but in the laughable expectation that one can have their examiner 'to order', like cheese and extra ketchup on your burger. Cambridge would have fallen about laughing upon receipt of this 'complaint' letter.

No, I'm pretty sure their problem was that he was black Shocked

So happy not to teach IELTS anymore. far too stressful. Give me beginner adult classes or primary school student classes anyday of the week.

Although, it was fun discussing issues such as the environment and various social issues with the viets.
