Looking at porn at work in the USA or KSA is probably not a good idea all around. I look at Dave's ESL Cafe at work...which I probably shouldn't be doing either now that I think of it. |

Dear RJBSD-
To be safe, I will just ask her to take me off the mailing list. I plan to fly below the radar as much as possible during my time in KSA.
Although you can't go around with a flag saying that you are Christian and you can't share your faith with the Muslims and especially the students you shouldn't have to 'fly under the radar'.
I've been here almost a month now. My students wanted to know if I was a Muslim because since I've been here I dress like them...meaning I keep my head (not my face of course) covered...yes...even in class. I don't have to but I don't mind because my hair is ridiculously short right now and it's just easier for me. I let my students know that I wasn't Muslim and they didn't pressure me or bother me about it. They are good students actually and have no problems with me being a non-Muslim. Now I did share that I was a Christian with the Muslim teachers and they have no problems with it at all either. Some of them are becoming my good friends...just as good as my Christian teacher friends.
Oh and the other day we went and checked out a nice western compound and I wore one of my cross necklaces. I am a Christian and although I can't be as open about it as I could anywhere else I don't feel, nor do the other Christian teachers, (from what I've witnessed anyway) that we must keep our Christianity a secret.
I use my work laptop for work but my personal laptop is for me and I check out Christian websites and share emails with family and friends that pertain to my faith too. This place really isn't as bad as many out there would like to believe it to be or claim it to be. I miss driving, going to the cinema, and getting to run outside (of the compound) but my stay here, thus far, is going nicely. I believe the secret is coming here with an open mind.
Cheers!
PS- I and others brought our Bibles here with no problems. |

Dear Deicide,
The crucifix will come in handy. Hope it's life-size (hmm, maybe that should be "death-size.")

John |

Are you saying that you hope that I am crucified? |

Militant Atheism...kind of an oxymoron and I am not such a person anyway...
Still more disappointing that John wants me to be horribly killed. I thought he was a peaceful chap... |

Dear Deicide,
If I predict that we are all going to die someday, that does not mean I WANT this to happen.
If I predict that bad things will happen in the world in 2010, this does not mean that I WANT this to happen.
If I predict that bringing a Bible and crucifix to Saudi Arabia is a plan that could easily have bad consequences, this does not mean that I WANT it to happen.
OK, I WAS being hyperbolic, but that's what hyperbole's for.
Regarding hope3809's (who's been in the Kingdom for almost a whole month now) writing, "I and others brought our Bibles here with no problems," well, I'm reminded of the drivers who say, "Hey, I've driven drunk LOTS of times, and I've never had an accident."
Hope your luck holds.
Regards,
John |

Well, aren't I going to be asked about my religion there? What do I say? Shouldn't I feign some kind of Christianity? |

Dear Deicide,
Yup, feign Christianity (and in doing so, you'll be indistinguishable from a fair number of "real" Christians), but don't go waiving a Bible around or wearing a crucifix (or trying to bring either/both into the country.)
If you're asked about religion, keep your answer short - "I'm Christian" - and then change the subject,
Regards,
John |

| I agree with John: keep it short. Most of the places that will ask you, like hospitals, really just want to know if you are Muslim or non-Muslim. They don't want or need any details of your personal religious beliefs. |

Thanks for your response. My husband is Egyptian and Muslim, so its not like I am afraid of being Christian. I have never had any problems when visiting Egypt. Except the one time I really lost my temper and said a very bad cuss word I should not have said.
But I do realize KSA is not Egypt by any means, and I don't want to invite trouble from the wrong places, if you know what I mean. |
