http://www.altdirectory.net/index.html

This guy claims he can get you hired on directly by schools and local Boards of Education. This is all for a fee, of course.

Has anyone looked into this? Is it a scam?

A quick glance looks fairly good. Here are the 2 main points.

Quote:
how much does it cost?

It costs 5,000 yen for a 1 year membership to my subscription mailing list.

what do I get for my money?

When you join you will receive details of all the Boards of Education that I know about who hire ALTs directly. On top of that whenever a BoE contacts me advising they have a current vacancy, I send this information straight to you.

I provide details of a variety of avenues to explore, that prior to becoming an ALT was completely unaware of, as you search for a quality ALT job.
He has "details of 23 Boards of Education, in 10 prefectures, who hire directly. " Whatever "details" means...

At least he doesn't guarantee anything, but he doesn't say how often the jobs crop up. Direct hire by BOEs is rare.

Paying a relatively small fee such as 5,000 yen might be worth it as far as some people may be concerned, though I personally would prefer to do the internet-surfing-type "legwork" myself and keep all the relevant hyperlinks on Favorites to the websites of Boards of Education so I can just click on each one pertaining to ALT/job vacancies and check them myself periodically.

The alternative is frustrating dependency on others who may get snowed under with so many takers for the services provided that they end up just waiting for who-knows-what coming who-knows-when.

Self-dependency is the best thing - or is it a case of not even trusting oneself to do the job and thus leaving it to others who are prepared to surf the internet for a price?

Unless the people offering such services can get hold of job leads that jobseekers might otherwise not have access to (as in a possible insider job), I see no reason why anyone should pay any money to someone else to access and forward information that is already freely available.

Here's a thread from another board on the same topic.

I hope it is helpful!

If the BOE that hired the guy comes across his website I can assure you the guy will be sacked with immediate effect.
If someone takes a disliking to this dude (such as his ex-wife) they only have to tell the BOE, that he claims to work for, about his "job on the side" and he will be out on his ass.
The dudes greed for more money could be his downfall.
