Seems like there would be a lot of TEFLers with that degree as well |

My first degree was in Peace and Conflict Studies. At the time that I declared, I was debating between that and Classics.
I'm not terribly bothered that a lot of degrees aren't "practical." My first job--the one that enabled me to save up the money to go abroad and start teaching--was as an administrative assistant--which a friend of mine mockingly referred to as a "glorified secretary." What four-year degree could possibly prepare you for a job of answering phones and sending faxes? That would be a dreadfully boring thing to study! Might as well study something interesting.

Actually, having a degree in a subject like philosophy, sociology and psychology gives you lots of useful things to discuss with students, if you are able to use the material - in precis form - cogently and comprehensibly. |
But only if the students have the language ability, and most do not.
Lots of schools want teachers to teach the language, not just chat them up, for that very reason. Students are students, and need to be taught.
As for this thread's topic, I've been in the biz for over a decade and have seen scores of resumes. Most seem to be Liberal Arts majors (those headed to Japan, anyway). |
