I am regretting not taking jobs in UAE and Oman. |

You had chances in UAE and Oman and declined them for KSA?
My prayers to find something, anything outside KSA were answered and I grabbed the chance to go to Kuwait immediately. (I'd turned down two offers in the Kindom [including one from AETAG - they can keep their 48-hour, 6-day-a-week, split-shift work weeks]; I accepted the third but have been waiting since August for my visa; they missed their November deadline}. Even if it is not the best job in the country, I figure just not being in KSA, I am already ahead of the game.
Of course, I have never been to either place and am just going by what I have learned (a large part of which was here on Dave's). |

The job in Oman was in a small town in the middle of nowhere Nizwa
and the UAE offer came after I had already signed a preliminary contract for a university in Jeddah.
But believe it or not, I have always wanted to visit and live in Saudi Arabia and wanted it to be the first country I worked at in the Middle East.
Maybe I will regret my choice in a year or two but I think I am somewhat fascinated by Saudi Arabia.
Maybe I watched Lawrence of Arabia one time too many |

FYI... This might already be know to all but try to come to ONLY with a work visa. I was was told to apply for a bussiness/vistor's visa, that it would be changed once I got here and that I would be able to then get the iqama (the perminent residency card). Well I found out that it was all bull. My visa is only for 3 months and then the Uni will send me to a neighboring country for another visa that will last intill the end of the school year. Another issue I am dealing with is that I CAN'T GET A BANK ACCOUNT! I am not the only one at my Uni who is in this predicament. So beware. |

That is the same thing that Golden Gate wants people to do, and even that has taken forever!

Still, just be happy you are working. I think I'd prefer working on the wrong visa to not working on the right one (or lack thereof). |

I thought the 3 month temporary work visa was the one to get, and then they extended it when you got there? I'm sure I read that on here... |

The only visa that let's you legally work in KSA is the Employment Visa. Any company brining you in on a Business Visa or Government Visa is technically breaking the law if you are teaching for them. You cannot get an Iqauma since you are not legally allowed to reside/work in KSA on a Busness/Government Visa. That means no bank account, no money transfers, nothing at all legal.

Dear dazedandconfused
"I thought the 3 month temporary work visa was the one to get, and then they extended it when you got there?"
When you're hired on "a regular employment/work visa," what gets put in your passport IS "a three-month visa." When you arrive, your passport is taken (and often kept) and you receive an iqama in its place.
The other, newly-appearing visas - "government," "business." etc. - are NOT employment/work visas - you don't get an iqama - and so teaching/living in the Kingdom while on one of those visas is actually illegal.
Regards,
John |

That was a much better reply than mine. Thanks John!
I can't say it enough, avoid working in KSA on a Business/Government Visa. It's illegal!

I don't think that we can emphasize enough just how important this issue is. Coming on a business visa doesn't sound like much of a problem until you run up against the serious practical issues it entails. Not being able to have a bank account or to transfer money is a HUGE problem when you are new to Saudi. |
