For ALT positions, I'd say about the end of January/beginning of February simply because they wouldn't likely be able to get the visa paperwork sorted in time for you to make the April start dates.
But don't despair yet. The bulk of the recruiting is probably only just starting, so it being quiet just now, isn't necessarily a bad sign.
Just keep applying, keep your options as open as possible.

Thats fine. As long as I know before the beginning of February as I have to A) apply for a Visa and B) give my employer's 60 days notice.

I'm just being curious, but what exactly do you mean when you state that you have "a lot riding on moving to Japan"?

I just really don't want to spend another year in Korea. If I miss out on the April offerings in Japan then I might have to wait until 2011. I can't go back to Canada either because there is never been anything there for me, period, even before the economy went south.
I'm really in a Japan-or-bust mode these days, hah. Its always been the place I wanted to be in and I was in some denial for quite a bit. |

When did you say you "have to" be here? April? Figure February or March interview times (peak season). |

Always nice to have a Plan B. Most of those aren't my Plan A.
I didn't expect to go to Japan and get the best job around, anyway. Especially not for the first while.
Why would they interview in March if the Visa takes two months and candidates wouldn't be able to make it over for the April start dates? |

Because they might accept you to start working anyway with a visa processing pending.
Because they might be looking for people who already have visas, too.
Because some foreign teachers give notice at the last moment.
Because some employers give the required 30 days' notice. |
