Ok guys, I am currently applying for a job in the Middle East, and they are asking for my top 3 preferences for countries to work in. Has anybody any opinions? I've no experience teaching, especially in the middle East and Africa.

The countries are as follows:

Lebanon
Saudi Arabia
Oman
Pakistan
Syria
Qatar
Bahrain
Erbil
Jordan
United Arab Emirates
Egypt

Please vote in the poll.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Paul

Considering that Erbil is a city...and Pakistan isn't in the "Middle East". I'd consider taking a crash course in basic geography.

Up at the top. I'm just copying and pasting the question from the application form my friend. You need to de-stress.

I don't get your post. You need to get learned of where you intend to "teach". Again...basic geography...and learning the difference between

1.) A country and a city, and...

2.) The Middle East and Sub-Continental Asia.

P.s.- "Cut & Paste" may be your problem.

Dear carmo85,

I think we'd need to know some things:

1. What are your qualifications?

2. Do you have ANY experience teaching?

3. What's important to you: money, environment, culture, etc.

Regards,
John

Well I have an interview set up already with a company called SABIS. They actively recruit Irish graduated. I have plenty of friends there already.

I ahve a degree in Economics, I am about to get TEFL (although it's not required for this job) and I have no experience. But, I have spoken to their HR and this is not an issue. Commitment and a degree are the requirements.

I hope that you know what you're getting yourself into and that the people you know on the ground there (wherever that is) are giving you solid information. I would not want to work for a company or institution in the Middle East who recruits fresh graduates who are neither teacher trained nor experienced in that field. The reason for my mentioned reluctance would be that the good employers in this part of the world mostly require quite a bit more than that. Therefore, the ones who employ 'teachers' with less than the bare minimum requirements/experience in order to teach students something would very often, if not always, be dodgy in some way.

So, I have nothing against your looking for work with your credentials as we all have to start somewhere. The red flashing lights are coming from your seeming unwillingness to listen to what the other posters are trying to say: in order to answer you and participate in your poll, you need to give them as much accurate information about you and your preferred locations as possible so that they can make an informed decision about how to help you make an informed decision. Confused Laughing

Bear with them carmo85, they know a lot more about what's going on in the Middle East than you.

Many of the people who post here have worked in more than one or two of the countries you list and may or may not return to them or leave where they are now. That makes taking part in the poll very difficult, at least for me, because I want to vote more than once and comment! Very Happy

Have you done a search on SABIS on the Middle East boards? If not, do so ASAP (I can't recall what's been written about them).

Yikes, again, more bad press. I am only completing this application so I can have a n option for September. I will try my hand at teaching in Spain for 6 months and I will then make a decision to continue teaching or go back home to Ireland and do my masters in Public policy.

Regarding what my friends have said, they have said that yes it is corrupt but it is a job and that's how they approach it. They, like me, have absolutely no intention of getting into teaching as a career. So let's see.

About the poll, if you have only lived in one country and liked it there, then vote. If you have no opinion on any of the countries, then I suppose don't vote. Regarding, the fact that I should listen to the people on this forum for advice and not ignore them, well, I started this topic. Is this not evidence that I am taking all opinions on board?

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming.

After that comment, you might as well go to Sabis.

Of course, the reality is that Sabis totally SUCKS and no professional teacher would get near the place, but since you don't care about your skills or anything, they will be fine for you.

Don't care about my skills or anything?? I am not using this as a platform for getting into teaching. However, stating that I might not care about "anything" is just down right insulting. I have a gap of 18 months to fill in which ever way I want, I am researching this as a possible avenue to explore. Please, do not become impetuous if you feel that I do not deserve the basic opinion of this website's members. With comments like that, you're really not helping anyone, including yourself.

Comments like yours are a complete insult to the professional teachers that most of us are on this board. We happen to think that students deserve teachers who are there for more than just to "fill a gap" in their time for a few months.

Go to Sabis...

Hence, my initial retort. This is clearly a simp! Cut & paste is amongst the most challenging of mental gymnastics!

carmo,
Hook up with robitusson and norwalkesl on this forum. They seem to be on a similar search and perhaps you three can share what you find collectively. May be more fruitful for you? I would strongly suggest Oman.....good pay, great lifestyle, good climate especially in Salalah, good work. Check it out.
