I know that most universities in the UAE provide an education allowance, but can that be used for very young (pre-1st-grade) kids? Thanks to anyone with info!

As far as I remember it only applies to school age children, I think I remember reading that the lower limit is 5 years old.Anyone else with small kids?

Baz.

In general, most of the universities/schools which offer educational allowances are only for grade school, not for preschool or day care.

With that said, I cannot tell you specifics (there may be schools which will pay the educational allowance for preschool).

You can always ask any prospective employer about their educational allowances and try to negotiate that they cover preschool for younger kids. The worst thing they can say is no.

Thanks for the advice. I think I remember reading that hiring a nanny/housekeeper is pretty affordable. If anyone has any comments on that, it would also be helpful.

A number of my friends hired nannies. But, in that case, you need to have a large flat with room enough to house them. Many flats come with maid's quarters.

This looks like the most recent information on housekeepers:

19 November 2009 update: Expat deposit for maids has been reduced from AED 5000 to AED 2000 but is not refundable until after the domestic worker leaves the UAE, according to a report in the Gulf News, which quoted a senior unnamed UAE Ministry of Interior official as saying "The deposit has been lowered by Dh3,000 to only Dh2,000"

"Minimum salary requirement for the sponsor (usually the male head of the family) must be AED 6000 per month, or AED 5000 per month if accommodation is supplied by the company, for them to sponsor a housemaid (there was a proposal by the FNC to increase the minimum salary requirement to AED 15,000 reported in December 2008)."

Thanks, everyone.

Regarding nannies/housekeepers, can we just take one over from someone who is leaving & thereby avoid having to bring one into the country? Or what about just hiring one part-time (not live-in)?

Officially I think it's illegal for maids to work outside their contract but in practice most of them do it - they need the money.
