That is very true. There is no such thing as a 3-month work visa.

But who said anything about the visa(KITAS)? I was talking about the work permit (IMTA), the duration of which depends on the amount of foreign worker tax one pays in order to get the permit. Pay 3 months, and you will be issued with an IMTA valid for 3 months.

It is the employer who needs to get the IMTA- permission to employ a 'foreign expert'. This allows them to sponsor the worker for the residence permit, or KITAS (which is given for a year, but which will be cancelled when your employment with that particular employer ends... it is NOT a work permit that enables you to skip from one job to another.)

All this is expensive/ takes time/ obliges the employer to pay taxes- which as pointed out above, many are unwilling to do for short term for something as common an ESL teacher. Maybe a major oil executive or something!

Therefore It is NOT easy to work legit short term in Indonesia. However, due to a long history of rife corruption, many kinds of under the table practices occur... sponsoring/ employing people for Social Budayas or them while on tourist or business visas while the long process of getting IMTA and KITAS sorted out is going on. However if there is a problem it is the foreigner who is in trouble. Beware.

yes, i understand that companies have to have permission to apply for work permits for foreign people. this permission is a pre-requestite for getting work permits. i also realize that the kitas is different from a work permit/visa. but i have never heard of 3 month work permit before.
i thought it was interesting and was asking where the information can be found as i would like to read more about it.

TravelNteach, I decided to PM you since this topic doesn't seem directly relevant to the original thread.

Yep... There is only a 1 year KITAS that can be renewed for 3 years or a KITAP that is more expensive and you have to have lived in Indonesia for 5 or more years..

There are Business Visas BUT you can't work on them only look for business... 3, 6 and 12 months are available from what I've heard.

Cheers!

actually u can renew your kitas 5 times before you have to make another run to a foreign country.

scobby doo, thanks for taking the time to pm me. might be worth noting for prospective teachers that the 3 month work visa might only be available where u are. never heard of it in any major cities that i have worked in, especailly Jakarta.

dont know exactly when that started but i know it has been in force for at least 7 years. i am on my 5th year at the same place. next year i will have to go out and renew. been that way for years at my school. so maybe i should have wrote that u can renew it for times and stay for a total of 5 years before it is necessary to go out of the country to renew your kitas. have u been at the same school for the entire 11 years?

That's interesting to know... I think it was a few years ago that I had to go out after 3 years when I was working in Medan for the "infamous" EF... about 8 years ago (how time does fly)

Thanks for the information!

Cheers...
