Sorry about your experience, but I do wonder. I mean, you were / are getting paid $38,000 a month with apartment (albeit shared)? That's pretty good. And a 75 minute commute (50 minutes actually, since most people do have to walk to and from bus stops, though your walk time is more than average), while not fun, is not that terribly unusual. Ditto that with the Saturday work. And if it only costs you $1,500 less out of that $38,000 paycheck to not work Saturdays, well, that seems fair (assuming the contract specifies Saturday work as part of the deal). Do the 10 hour workdays include or exclude your commute? And if you sign a 1-year contract, generally you're expected to work for one year rather than quitting mid-stream. Forfeiting one month's pay in such a contract is probably not that unusual. And what's the part about taking half of your salary in commission?
Honestly, the worst thing to me seems to be the commute. But surely with that sort of pay you could find something closer to your workplace. Also working with kids that little. But others enjoy working with that age group so that's more a matter of training and preference.
Anyway, it sounds like you've found something else with that sort of pay and with less hassle, so best of luck! |

Since you've changed your original post to clarify the pay (it was certainly not clear in your first post - and it was clear from my post that considering the presumed pay of $38k you're situation didn't seem terribly bad) it of course changes conclusions. You're right, paying 3 months salary to get out of a contract is ridiculous, though it begs the question of why you signed it in the first place. Other observations remain the same though.
I still don't get this taking half your pay thing. Is she deducting it from pay that should be going to you?
And where'd you get the $38k figure from? I agree though, it's not that hard. Just in other fields rather than teaching, unless you get into the NET or an international school. |

| I think it would be difficult for an untrained teacher to get $38,000 anywhere in Hong Kong, unless they are working on the NET Scheme. And, even on the NET Scheme, schools will mislead parents as Maggie does by claiming some NETS are teachers, when in fact they are 'teachers'! |

Hi,
It's a little late but let me clarrify a few things about sbondra. He had worked for HKEDU from September until November but because of constant absenteeism and other legal matters HKEDU had to let him go.
It's easy for a teacher like sbondra to criticise an organization, especially when things didn't work out for him the way he wanted it, but thankfully most teachers working for HKEDU are great and the agency has a solid reputation. |
