It was literally do this or leave China. As I have family here, not much choice.

I also knew they were not going to give up that money, so I emailed the world and made planning the subject of my next 100+people lecture that my supervisors were required to attend. The person responsible left for "family reasons" at the end of the term. The next term, I received a request to arrange the schedule myself, and was given options as to class size, days/times, materials, etc.

Next term, I was shafted on pay for the extra hours, by exactly 50%. Essentially, the beancounters took over and said "this is the prevailing wage." Which was exactly half of what was owed by contract. When I made it clear that this was a contractual issue that I had no problem letting their supervisors know about, I was paid in full. They did not alter my pay, they doubled the hours in the report to the beancounters.

Just a word of warning.. unis have figured out that there is gold in them thar language classes and have also started to offer "minors" [sometimes called second major, but is not the same as a double major in America]. As the only available time for the ridiculously profitable classes are on Saturday and Sunday, guess when those classes are scheduled ? If you are at a uni with very few native speakers, you get to enjoy the pleasures of mandatory overtime. In true fashion, I received no notice, and only found out when a student who was friends with one of my students said she was looking forward to seeing me tonight, which did not go over well in front of my wife. They collected 35000rmb+, secured a classroom, posters [in Chinese everywhere], held several meetings, and didn't tell the teacher. When I called and asked, they said "Your mandatory classes start in four hours and will last for two months." They literally wanted me to teach seven days a week. Twisted Evil

i did a "mandatory" class (i could call it overtime) at my previous job. it consisted of giving lectures to other english teachers on the topic of my choice. most of them turned out for the lecture but few paid attention and little interest was shown. to be fair i didnt put a ton of effort into it either but i was given such vague instructions i really wasnt sure what they wanted or what i should do. i stopped doing it after a month.

if a school tries to force you to do mandatory overtime, esp. for long periods of time and at inconvenient times for you, just stand up to them and tell them you're busy. if need be, manufacture a good reason why you cant do it. chances are they'll leave you alone and search for easier prey.

There were only two native speakers. I was the only American. AS they advertised native SAE speaker, I was the only prey.

The school managed to get everything wrong. The dean tried to knock my wife down to the ground. He was on a bike, she had recently recovered from back surgery.

Sorry for the "hijak." Needed to vent.
