That's exactly what I meant..The Big Z knew exactly whom to pay off and how much..the fact that he wasn't able to keep ithe whole business entirely out of the press might be attributed to his advancing age.
Anyway, the fact that Abu Dhabi has enormous oil revenues is beside the point.
Sheikh M***and his flunkies have always bragged that Duabi's wealth was based on banking, services, real estate and tourism...and decidedly NOT on petroleum.

Do you forsee $50 billion worth of British Holiday-makers and Indian Honeymooners showing up at he Dubai Shopping Festival this year?

Still nearly fact free I see.

Easy to brag in this little tribal game of "mine is bigger than yours" while knowing that Abu Dhabi will have to (and can) come up with the cash to save you... as it will.

Point? Why would a crashed real estate deal stop tourists from coming? They only care about the shopping and beaches. If they don't come, it is because of their own economies, not this...

Some Arabs in comment blogs -- they sound like our beloved 007 -- say the West is blowing this out of proportion because they are jealous of Dubai's great success. Hhmmm. No doubt. Success built upon the backs of Pakistani and Bangladeshi slaves who haven't been paid their cruelly pitiful wages in 7 months.

"Personally, I think the US is in much worse financial condition after the debacle of the Bush years"

Really? Bias and conjecture.

"Still nearly fact free..."

Facts! Facts! Where-pray-should I find facts concerning the goings on in Abu Dhabi? The Khaleej Times, perhaps?

My point is that the government owes fifty billion dollars to somebody...and I doubt very much they will be able to raise it through the "Miracle" enterprises the Emirate is famous (now infamous) for.
Sheikh M**** doesn't even have the decency or guts to offer an explanation or even a mildly believable lie through some PR hack.

He must hold all those people he's been dealing with in supreme contempt.
