WHAT?!? What is a re-entry permit? I heard my co-worker say she was going to get it since she is going home for the holidays. I am going home also and have NEVER heard about this. Please help! Also can I get it to re-enter more then one time? i will be going home 3 times before my visa is up. Help! I will probably go to the Shinagawa office, but have never heard about this. I feel so lost! HELP PLEASE! |

yes you can get a multiple one. Just go to immigration before you go to Narita. It will be good for the length of your visa. |

You will need a reentry permit to be able to leave Japan and return without losing your visa status. Not many countries do this, but you have to do it for Japan.
The reentry permit can be bought at immigration and other offices. Most people get one when they renew their visas. The REP is good for the length of your visa.
It can be good for only 1 time (4000 yen) or multiple times (6000 yen).
In an emergency you may be able to get it at the airport, but don't count on having a good time doing it. Authorities there often frown upon such poor planning and may grill you for a while. Obviously, things will be more tense during holiday rushes.
It's easy to get. Buy it, and have an immigration authority put it into your passport. So, bring your alien card, passport and money.
If you had one put in a passport that has expired by now, you'll need to take the old and new passport with you when you travel. I believe there is a fee to transfer it over into the new passport. |

You can't just take money to immigration to get it, you have to buy those stupid revenue stamp things. I had to run down the street to find a post office to get them and almost missed immigration's closing time. |

My local immigration sells them on the first floor in the same building, from the cafeteria, no less. Seems very Japan to not sell them in the same building. When I first arrived they were sold in a building across a busy road from the immigration office. Seems someone finally twigged how it might be inconvenient .... |

Bread,
That's what I meant. In addition to a site in/near the immigration office, you can buy the stamp in other locations. Perhaps it's not in the same office as the immigration office near you, though. |

At the Shinagawa Immigration office the revenue stamps are sold at the convenience store on the first floor. The re-entry permit counter is just up the escalator.
It costs nothing to have visa and re-entry permit stamps transferred to a new passport.
Little Peaches, if you go to Shinagawa, take the bus from near the Konan exit (turn left and you will see signs in English, the bus is 200 yen and you pay as you get on). Get off at the "Nyuukoku-kanrikyoku-mae" (Immigration office) stop. Go in the main door, buy 6,000 yen worth of revenue stamps from the conbini, go up the escalator and to the right (you'll see "re-entry permit" signs), and take a number from in front of the counter. Fill out a re-entry permit application form and a payment form, attach the revenue stamp(s) to the box on the form, take a seat, and wait. You might be waiting half an hour if they are busy, 5 minutes if they aren't. |
