I wouldn't go, as I'm married, and my wife would say "Abunai, dame desu!" (It's dangerous, no way !).

But I also don't think the security is that great at the moment in either of those places. I do like living an exciting life, but I would prefer to choose the type of excitement . For me, that doesn't include guns or bombs , Indiana Jones I'm not.

Maybe that's my problem. It may be possible that I identify with Indiana Jones too much.

(My students often call me Dr Jones- not due to anything with whips or guns, but because I wear an Indi-style hat to keep the Ecuadorian sun off my face.)

I wouldn't advise anyone to work out in the local economy over here in Afghanistan. It really is extremely dangerous. There are a lot of good things happening over here in the way of mentoring to the Afghans from the militaries of many countries. I have met military members who are helping rebuild hospitals and clinics, the police force, the power grid, and many other forms of infrastructure. I am teaching English to the Afghan military so that they can go to military training in the US. It is fulfilling work but I am surrounded by heavily armed NATO forces who are ensuring my safety. From what I have seen on the few convoys through Kabul that I have been on, there is no way I could imagine stepping out of the vehicle and walking down the street.

You're there and I'm not, so I won't claim to know as well. Yet, I know many people who have done just that, and lived to recommend that I do the same.

I do know it was very different at one time. One ex-coworker of mine was there earlier, and he said some of the people were so friendly.
