I doubt it. My razr is on holiday in China at the moment, but I just put my softbank sim into my K1 (its the next phone in the series) and it doesn't work properly. It accepts the sim but just keeps saying that there is no signal. Plus our phones are simply not designed to handle the basic functions of the comparatively more advanced Japanese phones such as mail, so even if it could connect to the network properly I'd only really be able to use it to make and receive calls. Phones here can send receive sms, but that wouldn't help since some networks can't send/receive sms to/ from other networks.

The iphone seems to be the only phone that can be brought and used properly.

You can get phones her super cheap/free. Our AU store has quite a range for only 1 yen. So it would be easier to do that rather than ponce around with trying to find sims and networks that the razr could handle.

Whats the best option for people there short term? Eg. Westgaters.

I read that there are phones from one yen etc...but i'm guessing you are locked into a long contract right?

Does anyone have any experience where they brought an unlocked phones with them to Japan and they actually worked? (not an Iphone i mean) i have heard that some do

I have a new unlocked 3G phone and I am hoping that it will work there .

Ta

It depends on whether or not your phone supports CDMA.

As for your other question, yes - contract phones will generally tie you in for a year. I think you can get a PAYG phone for a reasonable price once you have your alien registration card (gaikokujin tourokushou).

I got a Softbank prepaid phone at Don Quixote. It was like 10,000 for the phone, and you need to get a prepaid card at least every 2 months, the cheapest of which is 3000.

Just to clarify, is this prepaid phone will cards still an option? Also, I saw phones for sale on Craig's List Tokyo, but am I correct in assuming that I'd have to start a monthly contract with the company that made the phone?

I'm not against making a contract, and undoubtedly I will. I just want to know all my options upon arrival.

Just want to clarify - I'm taking my iPhone with me to Japan, I will unlock it before I go.

Once there, what would be the easiest way of getting a SIM, contract or pre-paid, I don't mind, and putting it in, and just have it work with no fuss.

Do Softbank give our SIM cards only when you agree a contract? Does pay as you go exist out there?
