Is it possible to fly into Taiwan on a one-way ticket. I'm not sure what my travel plans are, but after my Korean contract is up I want to travel a bit - starting with Taiwan. After that, I plan to go where the wind takes me. All I know for sure is that I plan to visit friends in Taiwan for a week.

Thanks.

Are you a U.S. passport holder? If so, AIT states:
U.S. passport holders will be allowed to enter into Taiwan without a visa for up to thirty days (no extensions allowed) if their passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Taiwan and the traveler has a confirmed return or onward air ticket.

My girlfriend and I took the chance and did it. No problems. The immigration officer didn't ever check about outbound tickets or anything. In fact, I left and returned to Taiwan at least 10 times during my stay, and not once was I ever asked more than a basic question. There is a risk, but what's the fun of living without risks?

Basically the issue comes down to the airlines. Lets say that you're flying from Korea, and you book your flight on China Scarelines. Now if you fly to Taiwan on a one-way ticket, and immigration refuses your entry cause you have no proof of exit, then its on the airline to fly you back to Korea. They don't want to spend that extra money on flying you back.

So, if you're going to be rejected it's most likely going to happen when you are checking in for your flight. In that case you can just go to an airline counter and buy a cheap ticket to Hong Kong that you can change the date of later, or refund if you want. Then go back and fly into Taiwan with your "outbound" ticket. Once you're in, then you can cancel or change your ticket to whatever you want. (I chose HK because it is typically the cheapest ticket from Taiwan)

Thanks both for the information. I'm travelling on a Canadian passport. Wally, what airline did you fly into Taiwan on? You mention Hong Kong. Can we fly into Hong Kong on a one-way ticket?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about Hong Kong, but since it's part of the ROC its probably similar to Taiwan. I dunno.

I flew American Scarelines from Ottawa to Chicago, JAL from Chicago to Tokyo, and then China Scarelines into Taiwan.

If you ever have a problem with not having a return ticket it will most likely be the airline giving you trouble and not the immigration officer.

Um....yeah, that's what I went on to say in the next sentence. Wink

yeah you can. The whole return trip ticket thing is a figment of the air booker's imagination. You cannot be stopped at any point in your journey simply because you do not have a return ticket to somewhere. So enjoy the palm tree island. Beware of the bettle nut girls.

Yes, you can be stopped. That you can't is a figment of your imagination. I know because it happened to me. Not everyone will stop you, but get the wrong person at check in or at immigration and you'll know what I am talking about. You have no 'cannot be stopped' rights.

I don't mean to sound pedantic, but the abbreviation ROC (meaning Republic of China) is the official name of Taiwan, not the mainland People's Republic of China (PRC).

Since July 1, 1997, HK has been a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the PRC under the One Country, Two Systems policy, which means that even PRC (never mind ROC) citizens require papers to enter this territory and they can only remain there for a maximum of seven days (mostly to deter PRC-based mothers from giving birth in HK!).

Buy a one way ticket to Guanzhou, refundable. When you get to Taiwan and get a job sell it or get a full refund. Make sure the school reimburses you.

Option 1:

Get a refundable onward ticket you later cancel.

Option 2:

Create a fake onward ticket. Copy paste an old E-ticket you have from some other trip, then change the information and dates. They just look at the paper at the airport, so long as they see a destination and date, they let you pass. They don't try to verify its authenticity.

For many airlines, you can view the entire itinerary with dates, you names, etc. all on the page before you confirm the flight. Go as far as that point, print the page and never confirm. It looks like just like a real itinerary but without much hassle.

This is just a method that I have heard working but haven't actually done myself. I intended to use this method, but when I booked my flights, it was cheaper to buy a round trip ticket and ditch the return flight than to just buy a one-way ticket (for reasons which I don't understand).
