Does anyone have any experience with this company? They are hiring through gaijin pot right now. Can anyone share anything?

Sorry for bumping this, but I, too, was curious about this. I have an interview with Global Connect Associates coming up and wanted to know if anyone here worked through them.

i never heard back from them. basically, the guy was hocking his website. he wanted me to create an account there and log in and connect with other teachers. i felt like telling him "why don't you just call me or email me when you have a position?" The interview was a waste of time.

So you managed to not get anything through them? That sucks.

I'm still going to go through with the interview, just to see what he says. The position I applied for wasn't from gaijinpot, so maybe this is a bit different.

I got something through them, but I turned it down for another one. Basically an offer was posted on his site, I inquired about it and he set me up with an interview directly with the school as opposed to going through some other agency. That was nice.

They really want you to have a LinkedIn account as if it'll make the difference between having a job in Japan or not. I'm not sure how much Japanese recruiters use LinkedIn but the site is huge in the West so you might want to make an account through there and do what GCAJapan wants you to do. It might not land you a job but it couldn't hurt in the long run.

Also, if any prospective employers google your name, LinkedIn comes up first which can be quite helpful.

All in all, I'd say do the interview with GCA and do what they want you to do. I didn't get a job through them but I feel I have some backing now for the future.

Imseriouslylost: That's good to know.

Anyway, I had my interview with GCA last Thursday. Seemed to go well enough. It's just like working with a temp agency, which I, unfortunately, have lots of experience with. Either way, I just hope that I manage to land the ALT job I was applying for in Sapporo.

As for the Linkedin thing, I already had one, but I haven't bothered with it since about spring of last year. Kind of hard to do the networking thing when I don't know anyone who actually uses it...'cept for like one person and that was from someone here on this board.

Does anyone here actually have a LinkedIn account?

i had the gca interview and actually they connected me with heart as there was a job posting on gca's website.

i think it's worth it as it opened up the door for me to talk to heart english school which has been talked a lot about on this japan forum.

you should do it because you never know who they may connect you with or other opportunities that may come their way like the one that was afforded to me. it may seem like a waste of time but for me it wasn't. you just have to be persistent, keep in touch with the GCA guys, show them that you're really interested, and also use their website to get in touch with other job seekers. network network network!

I was pointed to Heart English School as well. I'm working on the resume/application stuff now.

That aside, I fixed up my LinkedIn account a while after I made my last post in this thread. Updated it and all that. Still don't know anyone who uses it, though, but like you said, should just connect with those on GCA. It's better than nothing. Smile

i also got an interview offer with heart but have not decided yet if i'm going to do it. still researching. it seems like people on the japan forum have said that it's a breeze, but the pay is one of the lowest. that's why they let you get other work outside of school hours -- to supplement their low pay. but the extra work is not guaranteed from my impression. i don't know if they offer over time and if it's readily available.

I was just doing that in general. Sucks that I'm still stuck on this, some what. I'm on the HPResume April 2010 thing. I finished everything, 'cept for the short-answer questions, like to list good traits about yourself and include at least one negative one.

That's why I'm a bit hesitant. I thought that they usually went by experience as far as pay was concerned and I am also curious as to how many hours one can rack up within the week since 25 hours is just part-time (to me). I personally would hate to go for a job that's lower than like...¥220k/month, as the average looks to be about ¥240k or ¥250k/month before taxes, especially since I have a $30k hospital bill and two student loans to pay off...then again, beggars can't be choosy.

If I see no other offers, and I manage to land a job with Heart, even though I've been weary of the comp. since I started my ESL job hunt early last year, out of desperation, I'll take it.

yea i have a bunch of credit card bills to pay off but not that much. i'd be happy with 250,000 yen and that's what i think we'd get depending upon location.

what experience do you have? also you've been searching since early 2009 and have had no luck? where else have you been looking for jobs (companies in japan) and also you've looked at perhaps ESL jobs in other countries? have you been doing the job hunt hard core?

Oh yeah, forgot about my credit card bill, but that's relatively low compared to the biggies (student loan/hospital bill). I only owe about $2300 on that and my min payment amount for it is $0 (since I always paid above the min), and would like to stick to it.
Quote:

Majority of my experience is tutoring. Been tutoring since 1996, but not really for profit. Sometimes I do, but most of the time I don't since I feel that those being tutored really needs the help and the parents don't have the extra money to do so.

As for assistant teaching, I only have about three, four months worth of experience in that.

For ESL, I do volunteer ESL team teaching, which I started last year. I stopped a while ago, to go up to NY to work on my CELTA, but, got sick (hence the hospital bill, as I have no insurance) and had to drop out since I was in the hospital for 8 days, and was there too long to even attempt to make up anything). I had about three weeks left too. Said I could come back, but I'd have to pay my own way again, so that's out for me.
Quote:

More like started researching alternatives to JET, as I applied for 2009. Didn't get in. Due to lack of time, I wasn't able to apply for 2010 (especially with the CELTA class stuff coming up).

Anywho, Heart Corporation, RCS, and Borderlink were the main three I kept getting negative reviews on, especially RCS and Borderlink.

Whatever pops up, for the most part. Eikaiwa positions, mostly the "mom & pop" ones. Dispatch places, none until recently. I've had interviews and such, like with Sophia English school, and James English School. I was told by my interviewer with JES, who of which I do still keep in contact with, that those who are interviewed, are usually in, but, may have to wait until a position actually opens up (based on those they interviewed) since she said not as many positions are opening up this year, given the economic problem.

I'm interested in other countries, mainly for vacating purposes, but the other ones I am interested in working wise, I have no chance at "teaching in" given my status since I haven't a EU passport. I'm mostly interested in European countries...not like Eastern Europe, but more so areas like Portugal, Italy, and Spain.
