Begin the nightmare!!!! For the past 6 months I have been planning to move to Poland, In preparation for this I have been reading these forums with great interest and my biggest concern has been the conflicting reports on whether I needed a work visa. So, I called the Polish Consulate In NY 3 times and spoke to different people on each occasion while asking the same question "do I need a work visa to teach English?" and on all 3 occasions I was told NO! OK, so I arrived in Lodz on Friday and on Monday my girlfriend and I went to the the immigration office where I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I needed to get a work visa in the the States and that there is no other way that I can get a Residency card. Oh....yes, what fun! My first thought was.....Dave's...they warned you!!!! It didn't help!

So now I begin the process of walking through the minefield towards my Residency Card. Hopefully I'll arrive there with mind and body intact.

Wow. Let us know how this story ends, Jeff. There is a chance it could end up being my own story.

I went through the run around.

I actually got deported and I was trying to do everything the right way.

I think the big problem is that none of the offices know the rules. My school had another American besides myself. The office he had to register with told him much different things then I was being told.

So, after finally being offered a job with a Language School (2 weeks before my tourist visa ran out), I returned to the States and secured my work visa. They issued it for 9 months, I believe to correspond with the end of the school term. Though I was told (LOL) that it was for either 6 or 12 months! The school that gave me the paperwork to get my visa told me that they weren't really sure if they needed another teacher or not, but atleast I would be back in Poland legally if they did need someone. So I've been back a little over a month and they still aren't sure. Well, I'm here legally and trying to get some more private lessons in the meantime. After I returned I went to the Immigration Office (can't remember the Polish name for it) and I was told that before 45 days are up on my work visa to apply for a residency card and it shouldn't be a problem...(LOL) we shall see! So that's were I'm at. One big word of advice for people moving here is....Don't come until September or January. The whole idea of securing a job and having the legalities worked out within 45 days are certainly possible, but highly unlikely.
But.....EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT STORY!
So there will be a very good chance that you'll need to go back to your home country (I'm speaking to non EU members) to obtain your work visa...which can take a month and possibly a very expensive flight.
Besides all of the MADNESS, I'm very much enjoying my time here!!

Some of the more well-established schools that are willing to provide non-EU members with visa/work permit support do their hiring for September back in April-May.

If you're non-EU, it pays to get your foot in the door early! Otherwise you could be packing your bags for a border run or even a trip home.
