Hmmm... They claim they are internationally recognised. By who? I'd give it a miss. seems a bit of a scam. How much can you learn in a weekend? I've been teaching 12 years and still learning. |

County Clare IS on Tralfamador.
Incidentally it seems that very few people are aware of Tralfamador. Does no one read Kurt Vonnegut and Kilgore Trout these days !?
Or even watch "Slaughterhouse Five" ? |

I was a huge Vonnegut freak about 10 year ago. Read everything I could find of his. I even made a pilgrimage to the real Slaughterhouse 5 in Dresden (I have photos!)
Scot47, so..... you living in glass houses in Tralfamador? Dont forget to keep throwing stones! |

Yeah, you gotta watch out for some so-called 'internationally recognized' certificates - sure, recognized as a piece of sh*t, that's it. I was tempted to sign up for a place called Oxford Seminars that post flyers in the hallways and the newspapers of my university - they advertise an 'intensive 60 hr course', but there's no teaching practice advertised (except with your fellow students) - you might get some experience knowing the basics, but I can't find anywhere that would recognize that as an equivalent ESL training course |

There seems to be a minimum of 100 contact hours and real teaching practice for a reputable ESL course. It can be broken down to CELTA, Trinity and Others. The dodgy ones don't count. |

The Celta it is then! Even if I do have to find 400 quid from somewhere! |

I'm no expert, but according to the resident expert at our university language institute: "There are two (and only two) ESL teaching qualifications at certificate level that are recognised by the British Council, namely CELTA and Trinity TESOL. Many other 'certificates' exist but none are worth much internationally". |

I have a 3 month (240 hr with 40 hr practicum)TEFL which is certified by the Canadian TESOL board and is accredited. When I apply to work at schools here in Turkey (inc ones that specify CELTA or RSA) they don't blink an eye. It hasn't been a problem yet. |

Its just a shame its soooo damn expensive 1000 pounds ($1900) for a 4 week course, which doesnt include living expenses over that time (in Britain another 300 a month for rent and 200 for food at least), makes it a tough thing to pay for since you can't work at the same time. Still has to be done I suppose even if its going to cost me just less than half what i'd make it a year in China |
