Short answer: Yes, you can. But for the better jobs you'll need an MA.

If you are male, you can be hired in Saudi Arabia with a BA and the ability to fog a mirror. And no, major mental illnesses will not exclude you from the hiring pool. Shocked

The question is, would you want to work at those places? The online DELTA may put you up a little in the food chain, but not nearly so much as a non-distance MA and experience. Lot of places will offer you jobs, but you will have to carefully scrutinize them.

Potential employers are probably more interested in whetrher or not you are a graduate. Wiuthout a degree your prospects of employment are minimal

As for distance learning ("online") many places are suspicious of them. Unjustly in some cases I feel

Brother Scot, I think it's because they suspect that distance learning MUST mean that you have cheated...since that's probably what they themselves would do!!

You can get any job in Saudi with an on line degree (PhD, Masters, BA, Celt, TEFL etc) for they dont check. That is the recruiters dont check, but I would think if you are a direct hire they would check. Very Happy

Yes, if you are applying for an Employment Visa (Direct Hire) then you must have your degrees verified by the Saudi Cultural Mission (for here in the US).

It starts to get more complicated when you are applying for a visa from the Embassy in Ankara and your degrees are from New Zealand and Canada.

There are many high quality distance MA TESOL programs. There is no reason to be suspicious of a distance degree earned from a respectable university.

I earned a MA in TESOL from a very respectable UK university and I have never had trouble. In fact, most of the research I did for my MA degree has been presented at major Applied Linguistics/TESOL conferences, including TESOL Arabia.

A lot of what I read on this forum is from people who don't know what they are talking about and, clearly, have very little experience with distance education.

We also need to consider the fact that some postgraduate degrees in the European tradition only require a dissertation, as is the case with a MPHIL and PHD. I am planning to do my PHD from Saudi Arabia. Is that distance? Do I need to be in the UK to write up research on Arab students? How will I collect that data?

I am glad that that I have been in this game long enough to not read this stuff at face value.

I don't think it matters if the DELTA is online or not. The DELTA is certified by Cambridge RSA. That is what matters.

It is all about the MA. I personally think the DELTA is becoming an obsolete qualification. The DELTA came into existence before the wide availability of MA TESOL/Applied Linguistics programs. The DELTA will see a slow decline as the number of MA TESOL courses rises.

Dear Dominic Pac,

"As for distance learning ("online") many places are suspicious of them. Unjustly in some cases I feel"

This happens to be a fact in Saudi.

"There are many high quality distance MA TESOL programs. There is no reason to be suspicious of a distance degree earned from a respectable university."

I agree completely. Unfortunately, I'm not in charge of hiring in the Kingdom.

"A lot of what I read on this forum is from people who don't know what they are talking about and, clearly, have very little experience with distance education."

You're quite correct - I have very little experience with distance education.
I do, however, have a great deal of experience with the Kingdom - and so does scot 47.

Regards,
John

Pax vobiscum

In fact I have direct personal experience of Distance Learning having done a course in TESOL through the University of Leicester in the UK. I found it a useful experience.

As johnslat points out, the authorities in KSA, specifically the Ministry of Higher Education, are reluctant to recognise degrees achieved solely through Distance Learning. The word is that they prefer "blended" degrees, ie those with a mix of distance and residential study.

What I feel about this is irrelevant. I cannot imagine the competent authorities in Riyadh changing their policies on my say-so.

Have to agree with John and scot here.

It's not about what people on this forum think. it's about what Saudi employers think. And many if not most of them will not accept on-line degrees no matter what university awarded them. I'm not saying if that is a good or a bad thing, just that that's the way it is.

Unless you are doing the PhD with a Saudi university, then yes, I would say it is 'distance'.

Dominic-Pax,

I couldn't agree with you more.

Several people jam up these threads by handing out advice on matters about which they know little, if anything.

The original question here was "Can you get a job in Saudi with an online DELTA?"

Answer - Yes, you can.

You can also get jobs in Saudi with a distance DELTA, but DISTANCE and ONLINE are two different things.

So far as distance Masters degrees are concerned, the acceptability, or otherwise, depends partly on the employer, and partly on the reputation of the University that awarded the degree.

Yes, but you will minimize issues by taking the DELTA in person. Some ME countries and schools don't like online anything and consider such internet degrees useless for their purposes.
