Hello everyone,
My name is Dusty and I have a bachelor's degree in business administration. I am looking to work toward a master's degree at some point. I have done some substitute teaching in the past couple of years and have grown to enjoy being in the classroom. I have always been interested in teaching abroad while getting to see the world at the same time. I am wanting to know what certification I would need along with my degree, for teaching jobs in Korea, China, Japan, Philippines, or Hong Kong. I am not sure if I would qualify to go to any of these places. In the end, money really doesn't matter to me but I would like to put a little back. As I said before I really enjoy being in the classroom and would look forward to an experience like this while seeing the world and meeting new people. I would like to teach ESL or even business english if I can qualify. Any advice that you can offer would be greatly appreciated......hope to hear from you soon. |

Re: Japan
Read the FAQ stickies in the Japan forum.
No certification is needed for entry level work, but the market is filled with teachers right now, so getting something might not hurt. If you're only going to be around a short time, it might not be worth it unless you are seriously uncomfortable teaching.
As it stands, you are minimally qualified for entry level work (conversation school, ALT), like most newbies. The line forms at the rear...far away.
Exactly when did you want to work? |

I would like to start at the beginning to middle of 2010. I'm not saying that i'm going to be around for a short time yet. If I get in and really enjoy it then who knows what will happen. I just don't know what doors this can open once I can get on the ground somewhere and start making contacts. I can always do an MBA online so I'm not worrried about that getting in the way. Are there any certifications that I can do online that you would advise me to take? |

If money doesn't matter, than that's great. There are tons of jobs out there. ONline certs aren't the best. Try to do face to face with 120 hours and 6 of teaching practise.
AS to where you want to work. I'm sure you could easily gte a job in Korea or China. Phillipines, scratch that off your list. There's a lot of people from there who go to work in China.
Japan, not sure, I think the market is flooded now.
AS for HK. I know there are a few jobs, like NET. BUt competition is tough. |

Academic year in Japan starts in April, so middle of the year is pretty slow. JET Programme starts in August, but you've missed the 2010 application deadline.

Do a search. Plenty have asked that. Personally, I wouldn't do such a thing online, because it doesn't give you the needed face to face contact for trial lessons. |
