I am relocating to Mexico City in February. What are some of the things I should bring from the U.S. that I cant get or would be more expensive in Mexico?

laptop
plenty of clothes. I'm about 6ft or a little taller and the pants here are too short for me. I'm not riding on Mexico for what I'm about to say but here in DF people are very short compared to me so if you're tall bring plenty of jeans.
books in English. Yes they have the American Bookstore here but it's a JOKE compared to what we have in the States.
The following isn't a joke, I'm being 100% serious.
Underwear. The underwear here are always to small for me perhaps because I have a bigger waist than the Mexicans. No I'm not fat, I weigh 160lbs.
cologne or perfume. They seem to be very expensive here in DF.
TV. If you have one, bring it.
I don't believe you said which part of Mexico but I can tell you that a lot of things in Mexico City are expensive. Hope this helps. |

Vitamins are expensive. their cost is about 8 USD for 30. You should be able to buy 500 tablets in the USA for less than $25 US.
Toiletries tend to be on the higher side but not by so much. Buy your shaving blades at discount stores in the USA and you will better the prices here. |

Try to bring as many electronic gadgets as possible. A laptop for sure if you got one. Small, cheap electronic gizmos aren't so cheap in Mexico.
If you want to self-study Spanish, buy some books in the US. Very hard to find decent ones here.
Same goes for books about Mexican history, culture, guidebooks etc. Buy them at home.
Shoes are even more important than clothes esp. if you have large feet (anything over a US size 9 is almost impossible to find here) or extra wide feet.
A decent sweater and/or jacket. Winters are quite cool in DF and many other parts of Mexico. |

Jeans are a good idea. I'm 6'1" and never needed to buy jeans there but all my Mexican friends shop in McAllen or have friends bring their clothes.
Formal clothes however you can buy in Mexico. I've picked up a couple suits and slacks and since they hem them for you, never had any sort of trouble.
What someone takes with them really depends on the lifestyle they intend to live.
I'd say the best things you can bring with you are:
Camera, while I shoot film and digital, a pocket sized digital camera is what will give you the most memories since it shoots quickly, travels well, and allows you to share your adventures/daily life with friends and family.
MUSIC PLAYER and speakers - if you want to entertain, this is a must.
A good gradebook.
Cheap Unlocked GSM phone. I stress cheap. |

I'm thinking that the clothing and shoe issue might be a regional thing and the shops stock what is in most demand. Sinaloenses (people from Sinaloa, where I live) are generally tall. My husband is nearly 6 ft and wears size 12 shoes. Granted, size 12 shoes have limited selection, but so far so good, and he hasn't had to run around barefoot. Jeans are definitely not a problem for big and tall guys in this area. |
