Sounds like the Sanya area of Tokyo: between Minami-senju and Asakusa, I think sometimes called "North Asakusa" for the tourists. |

| Yes the two areas seem very similar. An American wrote a book about the people in Sanya, pretty downtrodden bunch. Reminds me a bit of the poor homeless that had a cardboard town near Shinjuku station, until a fire and subsequent police crackdown moved them out to the park in the same area. |

I may have been there...I remember seeing a lot of homeless people and cardboard shelters/makeshift tents not far from the lanes of market stalls that look like garage fronts at night, and many in front of the same stalls when it got dark. |

I have been here long enough to remember seeing that- it was a true shanty town right in Shinjuku station west exit, quite amazing to someone from New Zealand who had hardly laid eyes on a homeless person before. I don't remember hearing about a fire, but the first year I was in Japan (1996) there were clashes between the police and the homeless people there and their supporters when the police tried to get them all to move out. That time the police actually didn't succeed and they stayed. By the time I came back to Japan in 1999 though they were all gone from the station, presumably to Shinjuku Central Park. |
