Would you consider doing a runner from a teaching job in Florida?
I doubt it. So why do it here?
Unfortunately, all your actions will do, is add fuel to the mistrust that some schools have in their FT's. Not seeing your contract out, or doing a runner, is almost certainly going to make life more difficult than it need be for whoever replaces you at your current school.
See your contract out, and then you should have no problems getting a release letter, or even a letter of recommendation, which will smooth your way a little in finding a new position that is more suitable. |

Having been to both Florida (USA) and China how can you even consider anything in both countries to be similar.
Culture differences, such as lying about everything and anything doesn't happen in Florida on a daily basis with your employer even if they don't like you.
Other items such as Pollution ...no contest. China is the worst I've seen and I've been to midwestern USA, Vietnam, Thailand and China.
If this person is never going back to China he doesn't have to worry about the reference from there as it's worthless.
I would suggest that this person take Alter Egos advice and look elsewhere such as Vietnam. If the potential employer asks you what was the problem at your previous place of work just answer...."it's China". |

"Posts such as yours, seeking info on doing something which is obviously wrong and damaging to the field of FTs, should be in the same category as people seeking info on scoring dope in Yunnan."
So...where can score some dope in Yunan...?
I kinda figured my original question would get all twisted up on this forum. When did I ever say I was "pulling a runner?" Which, by the way, is a stupid expression. I posted to prevent this type of situation. I posted to get info. on IF I can legally obtain work in another province. I'm not sneaking off in the middle of the night.
And to even try and compare my job back home to my job here is impossible.
Thanks again everyone... |

OB, If your intentions are so elevated, why seek information here? Go to your employer, tell him you don't like the environment, and want to leave. That's fairly simple. He may just give you your walking papers, whatever they might be. He might like a cash payment, a breach penalty, for instance. Many of the "runners" that people pull here are simply a means of skipping out on the breach penalty, which is contained in any SAFEA contract, the contract to which most legally employed FTs agreed.
My contract has been violated many times, not by me, but by my employer. They have never paid me a penny. So in a sense, the contract has already been invalidated.
As for scoring dope in Yunnan, illegal activity requires a code of honor to succeed. People must be willing to suffer the consequences of discovery and punishment without "ratting out" their friends. If you are willing to run away from a contracted job because the city doesn't suit your special needs, I wouldn't want you on the wrong end of a cattle prod when it's my name they want.
Good luck. |

| Why accumulate negativity in life, if you can prevent it by doing the right thing? |
Hansen, your posts and replies here are some of the most negative I've seen on this forum. I think it's great that you want to apologize for the things you feel sorry about.
My words to the OP were:
Do as many runners as you see fit...
That means it's up to him, his choice, his decision, etc. That's the best any man can do, my man-up friend. We all have to make our own choices in life, and it's not up to others to decide if our choices are right or wrong; it's up to us, the ones who make the decisions and who must ultimately face the consequences.
If that's too deep for a Neanderthal brain to ponder, so be it.
Here's an expression I'm sure you're familiar with: Take this job and shove it. If the OP decides to sing this tune to his school or boss or to shout it from the rooftops to anyone else connected to his current situation and experiences in the Chinese city where he now lives, I'm okay with that.
You, of all posters here, who constantly complains about the character of our Chinese hosts, including this recent quote:
| Quote: |
| Other people, who look at things more from other perspectives including a professional one, would have realized that the matter need not/should not be carried into the workplace; however, bringing it into the workplace was exactly the sneaky, duplicitous, backstabbing behavior in which certain types of Asian people specialize. |
I have nothing to apologize for Hansen. Not in this post anyway. I make my own bed and I sleep in it, and not you, or anyone else here knows me well enough to make the kind of character judgments you toss around like Judge Judy on a Chinese holiday.
But I know you'll keep on doing what you like to do here, which is judging others while talking out of both sides of your mouth. And that's fine with me, too. It is, after all, your own choice!

You're right, OP, and I apologize for getting caught up in this twisted mess in the first place! |

Fuzz...I'm a teacher by profession. I've been teaching full-time in Florida for five years; it's not the teaching aspect that I'm unhappy with. It's this city!
Thanks for everyones input...I'm tired of grappling with the "what ifs" of bailing. Time to start planning my holiday... |
where exactly are you? china or florida?
in china, you'll lose a fair bit by relocating in mid year, end of contract bonuses (which in my case amount to ~ $2800), and we're just about to enter a 7-8 week period of holidays with pay (which you wont get by bailing out). not to mention the uncertainty of finding new employment at this time of year (which will inevitably burn thru more of your money). but i guess you've already thought about these things and got 'em covered |

AE, We'll probably not come to an agreement on this; however, leaving the matter up to him, when his choices will reflect poorly upon the FT community as a whole, is, in my opinion, bad counsel.
Mental health professionals are familiar with a concept known as "seeking permission." It occurs when clients/patients, seek permission from their therapist, caregiver, etc., to do something they actually know is wrong.
For instance, a person in marital counselling may seek permission or justification, to have a lover. Most health care professonals probably take a "morally neutral," "non judgmental position." They themselves lack a moral compass, have or have had a lover, or plan to take one. So of course, they can't take a stand for what is right, i.e., fidelity in marriage. Moral relativism is the default position for lots of people. It's not for me. I actually do care. I believe that some things are wrong.
A couple of weeks ago, the guard at my gate was watching a couple of kids throw [golfball size] stones over a fence into the street, where many people were walking, riding bikes, zipping along. I scolded the kids and asked the guard about it. "There just kids," he said. I walked over and hit him on the side of the head with my fist. I didn't knock him out, or even down. Just enough to get his attention. Then I asked him if it mattered who throws the rock which hits one of the bicycle riders in the head [or perhaps the eye].
Get it? Sometimes there are things which are not up to the person to decide, especially when it negatively impacts others. That's why societies have laws, cultural norms, and so forth.
Sometimes, "runners" are justified. But what this guy is asking and you are leaving it up to him to decide, sounds like rubbish, like an unprincipled, immature, individual acting irresponsibly.
He may not be those things. It sounds to me as if he is.
Is pounding on my neighbor's door, or knocking the gate man in the head mature, responsible, or principled? Probably not, better yet, most definitely not. But when out of options, I also resort to my default, which at times, is violence.
The "default" for a lot of people could use some tweaking. |

Hansen, your moral compass is skewed. You hit someone to prove the point that throwing rocks over a wall is wrong? I have a feeling your recent posts are bs, as the guard certainly would have reacted, or if true is going to react soon. (if it is true you should look out or you know the guard is a douche).
Comparisons with US contracts are horrible, as in the US you can leave and get your lawyer to deal with it. Even the threat will probably get the company to back down. I would leave a contract anywhere if I felt unsatisfied.
To the OP, jumping out of a contract will cost you your RP and therefore require a trip out of country. If your employer agrees then it might be transferable in country, but that depends. I concur, however, that you have to look at what you and the other party are responsible for. If everything is being fulfilled it is a bit dodgy to just run. You will not be a rep for all FTs in China, and don't even think about holding that burden. I would suggest really looking at what is wrong and why it is wrong before you run though. This is an internal search and no one on this board can help you with that. |

You're right about one thing Hansen, you and I will never agree on this or any other discussion on this forum. Based on your latest reply it's time for me to go into my own personal default mode, which is to ignore schizoid posters who think violence is the answer to their personal problems.
This will be our last debate here. I shall no longer respond to your absurd replies and deranged arguments that seem to reflect the actions of a man sadly out of touch with reality. You, Hansen, are the FT you speak of, the sort of expat whose destructive choices most poorly reflect upon the FT community as a whole. Like the mentally disabled patients you seem to know so much about, you've become your own worst reflection.
I wish you well, and hope you eventually get the professional help you so desperately need. |

Never mind the macho "man up" replies of a few Neanderthals here. Doing a background check of their posts and replies often reveals more hypocritical cynicism than anything else. |
True dat.
Follow your heart OP. This is not America or Europe. Most employers will not bat an eyelid when it is their turn to violate a contract. Tho some here may belittle the value of happiness, it is what you seek, so go forth and find it.
Things getting twisted at Dave's? Inevitable when Hansen gets involved. Some time ago he basically said any FT with a younger Chinese girlfriend was a deluded perv who was getting wallet raped. This equates to some FTs as being sad pathetic men desperate to hump anything and willing to pay for it, whereas all Chinese women going with foreigners are whores - respectful indeed. I received a private message box full of supportive replies over the exchange that ensued, many of whom had been burnt by the wrath of Hansen in the past.
