|

Hello. I would like to say that i love Guadalajara. It is an amazing, beautiful city.
I have had the worst luck for the past year trying to find stable work. I worked for a school recently that paid $100 pesos per hour, but could only offer 10 hours a week. I have been looking in other schools for a long time, but so far, no luck.
Prices here are getting out of control, i think i may try Mexico City as I have heard there are far more opportunities there.
If anyone has any comments, i would be happy to hear them.
You need to make at least $7 500 a month in GDL to live comfortably....right now I am only earning $5000. It is difficult, for sure. I have 7 years teaching experience and a TEFL. |

Take out some ads in the newspaper for some private classes. Go to the corporate office district of GDL during lunch time and hand out flyers or business cards to get privates. It works. Its a lot of hustle but it works. |

But it's not stable. Private students are like the wind. And there's no benefits or anything else.
Keep trying to find something. It's slow right now. Should pick up a bit in Jan. 2010. |

Man, get out of language schools - the wages they pay do not go up according to the cost of living. In fact they do not go up.
Hit the unis and prepas, some hire before the January semester starts - don't worry about your qualifications. If these places need teachers they'll bend the rules to hire you. I've seen it so many times.
Or get your own classes, it's not that difficult to cut out the middle man. Otherwise you'll end up running between two or more places, exhausted trying to make ends meet, making money for 3 language school owners. |

Curiously enough, The Long Way Home tells Shaner to get out of language schools.
Shaner are you working in a language school???
It doesn't actually say in his post that he works in a language school.
Another exapmle of TLWH jumping onto the 'I HATE LANGUAGE SCHOOLS' bandwagon. Again |

Just to refresh peoples memory, Prof. gringo defines a language school as:
Quote: |
A language school is just that. Where a teacher gives classes in one location and is not a university, colegio, business etc.
|
If you were to ask me for advice, I would agree with Prof. Gringos comments about trying for a new position. Just bear in mind that, as a result of high unemployment in the USA at the moment, there are more people in the EFL job market than have been for many years. |

I don't hate them. People that try to pass them off as 'professional educational establishments' can be somewhat annoying but as I've said plenty of times languages schools are fine for party teachers, short-termers and the like but are not to be taken seriously. His post (and wages) imply that he's been working in language schools. |

Goodness me! Lets stick to the facts. There is nothing to imply he is working for a language school... I don't know the guy, I'm not saying he does or he doesnt work for a language school- but lets not make unfounded assumptions
There are two pieces of information in the post- he has 10 hours a week and $100 pesos an hour.
Maybe he works for a SEP school- English teachers here often have few hours. (As do many university teachers in Guadalajara)
Maybe he works for a company such as ICI - who travel to businesses offices to give classes. (Referring to Prof. Gringos definition of language schools- this doesn't count).
TLWH has such a downer on language schools now that he is seeing 'implied' information in posts.
Take what he says with a pinch of salt!! |

The OP has 7 years teaching experience. IF he is working for a language school he is probably being paid the same as someone fresh off a tefl course, online or otherwise. I'd find this insulting. |

I completely agree that it would be insulting.
It would, of course be his choice as to whether to accept the position or not. No one forces him or anyone else to accept a position.
We still don't know what type of institution he has been working for...
my original point. |

If you want to quote me from another thread, than please respond directly to that thread, not this one! |

Prof. Gringo. I didn't realise that directly quoting you from the 'language school' thread here would cause offence.
I apologise. |

I wasn't taking offense to the quote. It's a matter of keeping things clear. |

hmmmm. I voted in the 'language schools' thread too.
I didn't use your quote out of context Prof. Gringo. It is a self-standing definition of what a language school is. I don't think that using your quote here has meant that things aren't clear...
I used your definition of a language school to clarify things for posters in this thread.
No harm done. |

Yes. I have been working for a language school. It is a very small school in Guadalajara.
Iwas drawn to the fact that they pay $100 pesos an hour and then slowly realized that they do not have many classes.
They are a good organization. They just are not agressive enough.
So.....any advice on other schoolsin guadalajara. |
