I have a student who does not want to study any longer in HK. She is looking at doing IELTS so that she can enter a foreign university/college. She is puzzled about the requirements in the Writing test. Any information I can garner from those experienced in teaching or testing IELTS would be appreciated. |

IELTS comes in 2 flavors;
General and Academic
Both have the same listening and speaking parts, but different writing and reading sections.
The entry requirement (score / band) for overseas universities varies by institution and program of study.
Additionally, there is usually a specific requirement for Academic Writing which can vary from 5.0 - 7.5
For further information visit the Cambridge IELTS / IDP websites.

Thanks Chris. That is what my student's confusion was about. The fact that the writing test varies for the General and Academic study baffled her. |

I don't know the level of your student, but there are now IELTS preparation course books available in Foundation level for both General and Academic.
Foundation level being 4.5 - 5.5 target levels.
These are ideal for a quick overview and introduction to IELTS.
With best regards,

The two versions of IELTS i.e. Academic and General are as follows:-
Academic is for those wanting to enter University.
General is for immigration purposes in proving their English level.
See www.IELTS.ORG for more information. |
